I would suggest reading the GIMP help file / program documentation, which is available from GIMP.org. Thats likely the best way to find out the specific info you want. Failing that I would recommend just playing with it.

Check that your tablet is set to pen mode in the tablet preferences. The thing you don't want to have is it set to mouse mode etc as that could account fot the issue perhaps.
Other than that, make sure you have your tablet plugged in before you start photoshop as it may not pick it up the other way round.

You're quite the advocate for Artrage dear Nickillus! Do you prefer it to other things? I thought about upgrading to the new release of Sketchbook Pro, but thought again as ยฃ40 extra for a paint bucket isn't what i'd call progress, or a bargain.
I'm glad to see you're doing more illos in the mag - that latest ImagineNation pic was great.

As Gix quite rightly said, I do use GIMP and also Sketchbook Pro2.
GIMP is one of those apps that you really need to explore - putting aside any expectations of it being like photoshop. Its does a lot of things that are very similar but a lot of things that are very different. Photoshop and Wacom tablets are designed to work with ...

Looking very nice so far! Be mindful that the highlights on the ice won't be as bright as the light source itself, try and use the lighting to make the focal points 'pop'. I would also echo the comments about the eyes.
This is just personal preference but, I don't think the small horns on the top/front end of the snout add ...
