The haunting vision of a giant, gleaming metal machine rising up over green, rolling hills, was one that stayed with me, from the BBC’s 1984 adaptation of John Christopher’s Tripods trilogy.

This piece was inspired by a moment in the third book, where a Tripod is persuing their city escapees, who are heading for refuge in the Swiss mountains.
