Playing God ?

This is my entry for the 'We Humans'contest over at CG Gallery (link to my WIP thread below)

The idea behind the piece: to me one of the defining elements of humanity is our curiosity, the burning need (or so it would seem) to know what's behind the next mountain, to discover how things work and to try our hand at taking them apart and putting them together again, possibly in new ways.

There's greed and inconscience in that, there may be even hubrys (the 'fruit of knowledge' making us self-sufficient and God-like), but there's also the innocence of a child discovering the world and a deep sense of wonder.

I hope my work manages to convey at least a little bit of those elements.

There are some quotes from human history and quite a few symbolic objects strewn around, anyone cares for a little 'treasure hunt'?

Elemental Zeron: Air

This is the second in my 'Elemental Zeron' series, Air.

I decided to suggest the elements by playing with body types, poses, colors and general shape of the scales.

Zeron have been with me a long time, they came first in a dream as invaders of an unknown planet, as soon as I woke up I sketched one of them, and they haven't let me be since, becoming characters in a novel I wrote later and evolving with time, a fil-rouge in my artistic growth.

Maester Vyman is the maester of Riverrun, the Tully's seat.

A portrait I painted as a gift for my wife's birthday.

This is her character in a homebrew campaign, Nimhelith, an Elf archer who has been hideously scarred by a spell and hides the damage under an half-mask.
Nimhelith has kept us company for a few years, it was high time that she got her own portrait.

I'm enjoying painting Zeron, recently...This one is the first in a series of four linked to the classical four elements.

Body type and color will change, of course, depending on the portrayed element. I realize this one might be too 'Mediterranean' for today's tastes, but in my opinion Earth needs to have hips...

Here's the story:

Fatamorgana

After a long time the answer to 'Is there other sentient life in the universe?' has come, and Earth doesn't like the answer.

The Zeron are here, they are high energy, featureless shape-shifters. More than that, much like lichen they are the fusion of two species, to produce a new Zeron an 'energy seed' has to combine with another being, and humans have the highest compatibility.
Are they 'evil conquerors'? Would it be right to condemn them to extinction? Is there another solution?

These human maquis aren't concerned with
philosophical dilemmas, they believe they are fighting for human survival. Often, though, things aren't how they look.

Indali'nazli is a product of rapid evolution from the Sunset Moth of Madagascar, hence the peculiar colors and the somewhat 'out of propotion' features .

I always thought that the perfect temptress would be very innocent and sweet looking.

So here comes my personal version of a Succubus, seen with her pet hell-hound.

Base in Painter, detailing in Photoshop.

Note: the out of focus background is fully intentional, as athmospheric perspective it may be a bit exaggerated, but I figured Hell's athmosphere would be hotter and thicker and as such more blurry

In time they exchanged feathers for scales, but their dietary habits did notchange.

The Fighter & the Manipulator

Another commissioned work of Sahiba and Illado teamed up.
The two complement each other well, he excelling in combat (both with the light saber and bare-handed) and she being a prime mind-bender. They are also rather protective of each other, so it isn't advisable to cross either one, s some other apprentices discovered at their expense.

The characters are property of their creators.

I wanted a chance to combine ancient elements with futuristic ones, in a 'suspended-time' sort of feeling, a waitng moment before something happens. What? This is for the viewer to decide.
I see this piece set in the same parallel universe (or multiverse) where 'Fugue' takes place, more will certainly follow.

Dangerous Women 2 - Elven Scout

This work was originally made for Ellen Million's Portrait Adoption, a site where ready-made portraits character are available for sale.

As such, according to contract I could show her only in small size and with a watermark (not many chances that your 'exclusive-use character portrait' is still exclusive after being shown un-watermarked on the net, sadly).

I've been of two minds after her inclusion in Exotique 3 and now I've decided to take her down from Portrait Adoption to be able to turn her into a bigger size portfolio piece.
So here she comes...

Iris is the first in a planned series devoted to minor Greek and Roman goddesses.

All will be nudes, in homage to the great classical tradition, and all will be masked, since divinity often clothes itself in myth, or borrowed flesh.

This will be my last update for a while, all my most recent works are under non-disclosure at the moment.

Given that Chromis are here, Zeron can't be far behind.

The Zeron are a simbiotic species of shape-shifters, in their natural form they are monochromatic, featureless humanoids (they can be blue, green, red or white), but they can assume the form of any other humanoid species, to better blend in.

...and they might be everywhere...

The girl in the middle is a just 'shifted red Zeron.
