This piece proved to be a challenge, because their isn't a lot of Taino reference. Growing up in Puerto Rico I was always fascinated with the indigenous Tainos, the scarcity of information  on them gave them more mystery. I tried to represent this creation myth based on Taino and of the numerous surrounding tribes.

The myth is about the creation of the ocean. It’s a story about a man named Yaya who kept his son’s remains in a giant gourd. One day he decided to open it because he longed to see his son, upon opening it water started coming out, and from the bones of his son fish began to come alive.
