The tomte is a mythical creature from Scandinavian folklore, like a little goblin. They are beleived to take care of the farmer and his family and to keep bad things away.
It's very important to respect tomten and especially in the winter season. In Christmas eve one should give the tomte a large bowl of tomtegröt, it's like warm, sweet rice porridge or rice pudding with sugar, cinnamon and milk. Failure to do this will result in an angry tomte that will destroy things and do all sorts of mischief. When I was a child and we lived in the countryside we always gave our tomte his tomtegröt!
