You can take any number of approaches to anthropomorphizing an animal. It all depends on the artist. I like to translate the proportions, and other characteristics into an upright frame, while retaining animal traits wherever possible (or practical). For instance, when drawing rodents I like to go with slender claw tipped fingers, puffy upper arms and thighs, and give them almost no midsection. As with actual rodents, I find their chunky compact bodies adorable.
