Lawrence: Sand Storm

In 2006 Premiere magazine voted Peter O'Toole's portrayal of T.E Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia (1962) the 'No.1 performance of all time' ! The accompanying article pointed out that this role came to dominate and in many ways overshadow the rest of O'Toole's career, much as the Legend of 'El Aurens' haunted the life of T.E Lawrence. I wanted to capture some of that feeling in this picture... but mainly I wanted to have some fun creating storm effects with Painter's distortion brushes, and paint a big mean looking knife.

A Little Strange

My submission for the CG society 'Strange Behaviour' challenge. It was inspired by two 'characters'. Firstly Steve Ditko and Stan Lee's magical superhero 'Doctor Strange'. The other 'character' behind the image is my 4 year old nephew. Like lots of kids he's obsessed with dressing up and roleplaying superhero's, usually Spiderman or Superman. Everyone's used to this but what if he had a thing for dressing as a slightly more sinister Dr Strange. Wouldn't this be considered real 'Strange' behaviour?

An illustration of characters and setting from Philip Pullman's Northern Lights (Golden Compass in U.S). It was a self initiated project, a book cover mock-up just to see how I managed illustrating within the constraints of paperback cover conventions. This explains the large empty areas - left this way for the title and other type.

This was originally going to be my entry for a competition run by Corel Painter magazine to coincide with the release of Painter X. Due to other commitments I couldn't get it done for the entry date but I thought it was worth finishing off at least and posting here.

The competition required you to come up with an illustration completed in Painter and including the Limited Edition Version of Painter X which was packaged in a Paint can. After missing the entry date I allowed myself to use a little bit of Photoshop as well, and got rid of the Painter X can, which didn't really fit in with the rest of the work.
