The flexibility of the Roman legion prevailed over the Macedonian phalanx during the long Macedonian wars. The Macedonian army had changed it's tactics from the days of Alexander. The heavy cavalry no longer was the decisive arm of conflict. The later armies began placing more emphasis on the phalanx as the main instrument of war.
