In ancient Britain, peat bogs often recieved the remains of human and animal sacrifices. I suppose the inspiration for this monster sprung from the idea of some nameless, wicked necromancer summoning up the spirits of the victims that lay restless in the bog, animating the muck in which their decomposing flesh lay into this gruesome, lumbering servitor.
