Soft-Shell Knight

A soft-shell crab is a Japanese delicacy wherein a certain species of crab, naturally born with a soft shell (as I understand), is fried and served with a Ponzu sauce. It's actually delicious.

Now, this charging knight has no idea that he's about to become fried too. Only his horse knows, hence the horrified expression of the poor beast.

In case you haven't yet figured out, there's a giant dragon head in the background...(yes, I want it to be subtle and not be perceptible right away. I want the viewer to look at the image for a little while and suddenly go "wait...is that...?"

This is one of those images that, purposefully, can be seen from different angles. The pro-Bush will see a dramatic leader proudly holding its nation towards victory. The anti-Bush will see a grinning Medieval Regent holding a war-torn flag, thinking more about his elite counsellors than his people. Lastly, those well acquainted with WWII propaganda will be seeing yet something else...

Friday, October 13, 1307 is the night all the Templars of France got arrested by the men of Philip Le Bel. Those knights were warned just before the arrival of Philip's militia and ar escaping via an underground secret passage, bringing with them some invaluable treasures (in the chest). Money, documents, statues, perhaps the Grail?

The Giant, Cthulhu

A tribute to H.P.Lovecraft, author of the Cthulhu Mythos and father of a certain genre of literary horror, and N.C.Wyeth, a Brandywine painter extraordinaire, author of "The Giant". The original has a "normal" giant walking the other way, and the caped monsters are actually children.

This could also be simply "The Giant, 20 years later...".

medUSA, is a play on word from "medusa", the legendary monster, and "medical USA", or basically a criticism of the disastrous Medicare system in the USA, a criticism of an over-medicated nation where a problem is often solved with a pill, and also a criticism of the pharmaceutical megacorporation congregation whose primary goal is making money, not anything Hippocratic.

Lastly, it was an opportunity for me to draw a new version of Medusa, without snakes and in a crypt, but with syringes and in a shiny office space. Let's say a modernized version.

Deadline: 2 weeks. It was fun! and insane. The initial collage was made by the band members and I had to repaint over everything (esp. making sure that there were no copyright issues). This is the reason why you will recognized parts that look similar to parts of famous paintings. At first, it looks like total chaos, which works when the subject matter is war, but then somehow, I think it works together rather well. Organized chaos, I suppose. There's a couple of Easter eggs in it, and I will reveal one that isn't very obvious unless you're from my home town. There are 3 flags in this image (though on the cover proper, a frame covers one). On the top left, a blue flag with yellow stars is the flag of the European Commiunity (EU). In the center, you have a red flag with a white cross, that's Switzerland. Just below the EU flag, you have a yellow knight (next to the green Sarassin) whose shield is actually the flag of the City of Geneva, where I was born, so you get: Europe, Switzerland, Geneva. That's one egg :)
