Cardinal Dragon

I painted a dragon for McFarlane's Myspace Art Contest, and was selected as one of the winners. That means I get a dragon toy and I get to be one of their top friends. I'll enjoy that while it lasts.

The piece evolved as I was drawing the dragon's details. I kept thinking of the cardinals that I was seeing on my bird feeders at home - that's where the dragon's red color and dark spots around the eyes came from. From that thought, I leapt to the idea that a catholic cardinal could be riding him. A dragon in the service of the church sounded interesting enough, and why not, religion is a strong element in the Spawn universe. It gave me a lot of opportunity for ornamentation and the motivation to saw down the dragon's horns and chain him to the monastery foundation.

Oxygen King

In a deforested future, still powered by carbon, it became apparent that oxygen was becoming an invaluable commodity, much as water had been in the century before and oil in the century before that.

Anticipating the trend, Lord Javor consolidated his power by gaining the most direct control possible over that vital resource. Step one was a course of genetic and cybernetic alterations in which he converted his respiration system to expel O2. Step two was the eradication of every other oxygen source through the buyout and intentional drought of chloroplast farms. The bottleneck in oxygen distribution caused a global collapse of civilization and the die-off of everyone unable to reach shelter in his fortress. Tank hauling platoons were able to make temporary trips outside, working the fields for food production and extending Javor's power beyond the throne room, but for the most part he had to distribute oxygen directly to his subjects.

Now, in order to keep his tiny feudal economy running he must devote every minute to keeping his subjects breathing, either directly or by tending to storage devices. Soon, he thinks, he will give up and rest. As he slowly starves to death, he will take pleasure in the fact that no one remains who can dethrone the Oxygen King.

Though it's a mild-mannered creatuer, it's best to take extreme caution when traversing the Goarnusk's habitat. The animal pockmarks its nesting/hunting ground with thousands of highly unstable eggs, the contents of which explode upon contact with air. So watch your step and don't break any shells! This combined hunting and reproductive technique is remarkably efficient because only a small percentage of the eggs are actually fertilized - at which point their chemical volatility is neutralized. In other words, fertilized eggs don't explode, but the vast majority of unfertilized eggs ensure that few are intentionally tampered with. The Goarnusk's wide foot pad for even weight distribution, heavy mucus production, and motherly touch allows it to crawl where it pleases with rare fireworks. The remains of heavy footed creatures keep the scavenger well fed.

Ortho - 3-eyed Mechano Goblin Hunter

I tied for the win on this CA.org activity. Description: When the evil wizard Ten-neardith set goblins upon the land, he'd had no idea that they'd be so successful. In only two turns of season the goblins had wiped out nearly half of the peasant population and sent the rest fleeing across the sea. To bring the goblin plague back under control, the wizard constructed a Goblin Hunter; a synthesis of corpse, iron work, magic and blades that was powerful enough to slaughter all the goblin tribes. If it, like the goblins, turned out to be too powerful, Ten-neardith could always dismantle the mindless hunter.

Prominent resonator disks at the front of this monster's shell form the eyes of a tribal mask illusion. A hypnotic brain wave then generates an artificial devotion so steadfast that any beast will offer itself up for sacrifice. Its vine-tentacles produce hallucinogenic polyps that look like berries and compound hypnotic control when ingested. After the hypnosis is in full effect, the creature's real head will stop posing as a tree root and begin to feed. The commanding effect of the hypnosis is so powerful that victims rejoice in the consumption of their own flesh.

Half-Animal Thief

This was my first win in CA.org's character of the week activity.

As shipping routes were first being established in the eastern Mediterranean, a timid aquatic civilization was being displaced by the growing traffic and trade. In a hopeless attempt to preserve their secluded way of life, these Cephalopodic humanoids conducted raids on port markets. The Octopus men were perfectly adapted for thievery with skin that could morph color and texture to blend in with all the rich patterns of the bazaar and a tentacle for every tasty morsel. Regrettably, as much as they stole and sabotaged, it was not enough to stem the surging tide of commerce.
