Interesting character at the bottom, what's the story behind this guy? Little bit dark at the moment, would like to see some highlights and the background defined a bit more, though I'm sure you're going to work on these things :)

The sherlock looks pretty good. I think you have the likeness down.

His clothes are looking very flat though at the moment. Try to bring out more form by varying the highlights and shadows some more. The light from the tourch could be used effectivley to give him some sharp highlights and the general darkness of the environment would make the shadows really heavy, so keep that in mind..

I added some detail to the clothing as Domtopia suggested. I'm struggling with the background though.

I thought I might do a bit of a paintover just to test out a theory. By lifting the torch light a little it gives the whole image a strong direct light source. The effect is to alter the contrast quite dramatically which adds depth.

I am just experimenting but I think it could be something that you could weave into this image to improve the weight and gravity of this character and put him into his environment a little bit more.

All I did was use a large, soft brush set to a low opacity to create the glare and then added a couple of brightness/contrast adjustment layers until I was happy with the lighting and then masked off the areas I wanted darkest. Hope this helps a little, but see what you think.

Oh that's a cool idea! I didn't think of doing that. I was mostly using the following picture as a reference:

But I think veering off from that and doing something like that would be much better, thank you for your help. :D I'll see what I can do. If you don't mind me asking, how does one "mask off" areas? xD I use Photoshop Elements 7 and assume I can do this in it?

I just got a new computer and now I have PSE 9! I used to use PSE2 and I must admit that I can't see much difference between the two, so I guess version 7 will be much the same as 9.

So, what I did to "mask off" in the paintover was to put in new brightness/contrast adjustment layer from the 'layers' drop down menu, then alter the brightness/contrast sliders to where I wanted them to be. Now in your layer stack there will be a new layer with a little icon on the left and a white thumbnail on the right. That white thumbnail represents the layer mask. At the moment it is all white, but if you paint onto that layer you will mask off the area under the area you paint. I think you can only paint in shades of grey to black, but the darker the black the more absolute the mask.

I like how the face is going, the shoulders are driving me nuts. I can't decide where to put them. This felt "right", but I keep fidgeting and shifting them around, help?

I think that the shoulders should reflect her femininity, but also her strength. Therefore make her a little broarder but slope her shoulders, and make a feature of her neck which I think could be a little longer.

That's my view anyway!
