    Tarot Bi-Weekly Challenge #12 - The Lovers - WIPS

For those of you who don't know about this, we are going to have a bi-weekly challenge to depict a tarot card from the Major Arcana. This will last approximately a year. At the end of the year we will have the full Major Arcana. Two wips and a final are required for entry.

The only real stipulation is that The final image must be in the form of a card, with the card name and number, not just a painting
I will give you a brief meaning, but it's probably a good idea to do your own research.

    The Lovers (L'Amoureux)
The Children of the Voice; The Oracle of the Mighty Gods

    Card Number: 6
    Key Number: 17
    Rulership: Gemini
    Hebrew Letter: Zain
    Translation: Weapon or Sword
    Numerical Value: 12

    Divinatory meaning
Upright - Harmony and union, choices to be made using intuition and not intellect.  Difficult decisions to be made not necessarily about love.  Some form of test and consideration about commitments.

Abstract thought, internal harmony and union, second sight.  Possibly a struggle between two paths.

    post your WIPS  in here

    FINALS in the FINAL thread

This challenge ends midnight  Friday 13th July  - we will then vote for the winning card, and then on to the next one

Having just finished 'The Scar' it is difficult not to depict them with scars...

However I haven't enjoyed the book so it's not that difficult.-

Originally the faces are more desire and lust influenced – but I think I may soften them in the final piece. I also want to add some symbolism into the outside areas – cupid, tree, choice somehow.

    Crits welcome!

rikku - nice start, those two entwining heads at the top look interesting - the woman sorts of look angry right now :/

wip collage from quickie sketch to where I'm at atm...supposedly he'd be undecided between the two lovely ladies (the dark one really needs to be brightened a bit) but he kinda looks okay with both :P

     Hey Heimdayal - looking good!

It is worrying that more people are interested in  Death than Love...

We had some late entries last time - so here's hoping.

Was busy with some other works, but don't count me out just yet ;) (although making the deadline's gonna be a tight one this time around...) Must be because of the holidays, I suppose?

Heimdayel, your style reminds me of Elfquest somehow. Your costumes keep getting better and better; this one especially has been done beautifully. I love how the hem of the skirt flows against the background.

Rikkumon, I'm curious; do you make this in Photoshop, or a program like Illustrator? Great crispness and symbolism. The woman's eyes aren't very angry compared to the sketch (you'll see if you cover the eyebrows), but other than that, looking good so far!

For my piece I'm going to try and get the Leonardo da Vinci palette right. It should stay sketchy throughout the process, like it was drawn in an old book.

Hey everyone! I'm back for this one!! Great work so far. Komu, her shoulder looks.. strange, due to anatomy problem I think.

Heim and I had almost the same idea... that is really frustrating xD.  So here is my first wip, really sketchy, two girls one guy. I've decided to do a new version of the nova art tarot card of the lovers. I put two girls so it represents the choice to make... (will explain clearly at the end xD)

Ooh, it'll be interesting to see how you both work it out! And glad to have you on board, Elodea! Your card looks spicy.

Thanks for confirming the shoulder. As I posted it, I was wondering about it. Not too late to change luckily, thanks :)

yay more people! hoping you guys and gals will have time to finish 'em for tomorrow night

and don't worry too much about it elo ,was taken from this tarot set (can't remember which) that depicted a man with two women, one old one young..it also had a tree on fire and a tree with grapes in the BG as well for some added symbolism - your characters look quite..passionate :P plus, we're taking two completely different approaches too with our three characters anyways

komu - sketchy feeling should work out fine with what you have so far, I could  see it work nicely on an aged parchment...and I have no idea what elfquest is but now I want to find out :D

Re: Tarot Bi-Weekly Challenge #12 - The Lovers - WIPS

Aaah you're right Heim. As I work on my card, it's getting more and more different than yours :D I've decided to do two rivers in the back so it can reprensent some more the "choice" to made, two different paths available... One blonde and one tanned girl with dark brown hair, dressed only with soft white gowns. I wanted it to look somehow like greek dresses... two girls for one god.. like Apollo, god of love and music, naked, but still impossible to see his "pack" :P. I think that's enough of inspiration xD

Here's ma' wip2 ^^! (almost finished lineart I think. started some colors)

Wow, Elodea, I really like this last piece! Colouring it in and doing the lines makes it a little less suggestive from before, but in a good way. It would almost be a pity to put your elaborate border around it.

Here's my second WIP. I'm definitely going for Renaissance sketch/pastels style. Maybe a renaissance border as well, though that depends on time left.

Nice! It's very detailed and full of emotions, although the girl here looks angry, it still looks great. I was actually thinking at first that they were fighting if I had not read the description.
