Lost in space: new subscriber cover art

The brand spanking new issue of ImagineFX should be rocketing its way to subscribers' doorsteps as I type, and for this issue we've asked Derek Stenning to create a unique sci-fi character for our cover.

And he's done more than that, providing us with a cracking workshop that explains his artistic process. Also in the workshop section David Demaret takes us through the creation of an epic sci-fi painting, with an accompanying video, and Marc Brunet's workshop helps you draw and paint a starship trooper.

In our artist portfolio feature we look at the rise of digital art whiz kid Dave Rapoza, whilst elsewhere James Gurney shows us how to use maquettes to enhance your art, and we discover the possibilities of digital plein air thinking with the help of a selection of pro digital concept artists.

Of course there's loads more besides... but for now, tell us what you think about the new cover.

    ----------

Have you got your issue already? Tell us what you think on this thread...

You can buy a print edition when it goes on sale to the public this Friday.

Get a digital edition for your iPad & iPhone and desktop and Android devices.

And there's also the Barnes & Noble Nook edition.

I think the picture looks nice and I do like the colour and rendering, but the spacesuit seems rather impractical for actual space use Stick out tongue The helmet kind of reminds me of those big old fashioned hair dryer thingies...

Personally, I love the color palette, lighting, and think it's wonderfully painted. ... But I have to say I'm not a big fan of the extremely over-sized helmet, but again, that's just me. It seems to take all the attention, and just doesn't seem to fit well with the rest, and it looks like it would be way too cumbersome to be functional.

its not just you dave.  i have that feeling as well.  i'm doing my best not to go into space geek mode and talk about the new suit designs and why i dont like her space suit as well XD  don't get me wrong i do like the cover, i just find it a little unbelievable.  i do like the fact she isn't looking at us :) and the colours are lovely.

though i did find it amusing sincer i am working on a portrait of an astronaut at the moment and look what the mags about... scifi i mean sure mines more space art since its a real astronaut and such but hey it amused me :) i never read whats coming next issue in i like to be suprised XD

i was also impressed that my mag landed on my mat hours before this was posted XD

Maybe the helmet isn't big. Perhaps her head is just really tiny. Big Smile

I like the large helmet. I also like her looking at the tiny door and wondering how she'll get out through it.

I thought this months cover was awesome when it came, yesterday! The huge helmet is great and the slightly curious/slightly worried look she has really makes it stand out as different. Plus I love the added number 83 on her suit.

There are some articles on digital illustration inside too which are of some general interest, should anyone care to take a look... Stick out tongue

I just hope my issue arrives this month! Last month's is still among the missing. I have written to the company but haven't heard anything yet. They have been very good about replacing stuff in the past so I'm not worried.... I'm justHuh? ANXIOUS!

I only just got the last issue yesterday <waves fist in the air at Australia post>

So now I suppose it will be 4 weeks to get this one!

For the record I like this cover and I think her helmet is oversized so she can apply her lipstick without needing to remove it....that said there is a definite centre of gravity issue here (no pun intended)
