    Guard/Soldier WIP

Hey guys, about halfway done with this one. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I have nothing. This looks great to me so far, I love the lighting. What's that outside the window though? My first thought was it was the bloody teeth of a dinosaur or dragon, but something tells me it's not that.

I'm guessing the sun is setting behind a spruce forest. Could be a little clearer but then it's not the focus of the image...

    Re: Guard/Soldier WIP

This is really looking good, Jonathan. Though I may be wrong here, I believe the battle-axe is throwing off the perspective of the entire image. ... It appears the battle-axe & armor are at the same depth, but the armor appears further back in relation to the character, whereas the axe does not. This would also make the axe huge, being more then 5' in total length and with blades possibly wider then the shoulders guards of the armor. (which could still work) ... But at the same time, the battle-axe also makes the fireplace look tiny, probably no more the 2'x2' ... so when you look at the character, window, armor & fireplace, they seem to work well together. But the axe just doesn't seem to mesh as is. ...Again, I could be wrong, but I would suggest trying the axe at 50% of what it is now, and see what ya think. :)

I think 50 % would make it look tiny! Dwarves are known for their big axes - but maybe say 75-80 %? That'd at least make it shorter than the dwarf himself and thereby a bit easier for him to wield. :)

This is awesome, - I couldn't possibly find any fault with the standard of your work in comparison with my own. I like this a lot because it reminds me of a bothy I spent a night in, while trekking around the highlands of Scotland for 3 weeks.Although there was no power or gas heating, the place was extremely warm and inviting compared to the harsh cold night outside. I think you have captured the feeling I had in the bothy and perfectly portrayed it in this painting!

That's so obvious now. I'm an idiot.

Awesome feedback guys--really appreciate it! Dave--I'll have to brainstorm about the axe and armor. I definitely see what you mean, but I'm mostly sold on the axe, and its size in relation to the window and hearth (though I may change the hearth back; I had it extending off the canvas, but I shrunk it to help with perspective). I supposed the armor could be a little bigger, and I can brighten it some, which should help with the depth problem.

    Re: Guard/Soldier WIP

Yeah, Voluspa may be right about the size. I actually thought it could be cut by a third at first, but then the armor & window looks so much further back, that's why I suggested 50%.  I also didn't see him as a dwarf, which would make a more sense if he was. But the armor, being on a stand of full height with it's drapery & slim appearance, gave me the impression that this was a normal sized human, which also would make me believe the window would be centered around eye level, which then does not mesh with the fireplace & weapon. You also have an illusion of sorts, where the top of the table and bottom of floor (where the axe rest) appears to be on the same plane. ... Hope you don't think I'm just looking for issues or nit-picking, because I really like the pic and look forward to seeing it completed.

Couple suggestions if it helps ya at all. - You could expand the fireplace, both in width and height to help make it fit the weapon better. (simply running it off the page would do for the width) Then you could enlarge the armor some, and just have the stand/pole come down to sit on top a box or crate with the fabric draped down and then along the floor. This would help take away the tall, slim appearance it has now and help it mesh better. :)

I personally think a huge axe is nothing to worry about. It's just a big axe used with two hands.

I don't know how many times I've said that in my life, trying to reassure some people.
