This one I made some time ago but some thing just wasn't right and it had to wait for my attention.Now I think It is ready to go to my gallery.It took me to make it around 20 hours i think (not sure because it was few months back) all in photoshop.I was using few references as help.

 

ooooh scary.  You've done a great job of capturing movement in the fur. He looks like he's about to leap out at you.  That furm must have take AGES even with fur brushes.  Great face too. I love the nice moody colour pallette - it makes his eyes & face stand out nicely

 

any tips for backgrounds? i suck at them and am not really sure where to start. I've been copying photos for practice but making my own up is hard.  :P

Thank you for your kind comment .For backgrounds I use reference pictures as well . I take from them only basic shape  ,mood and light . For my most important in background is perspective which I make by  lighting up and decreasing saturation for distant background.

Hi, nice start but at the moment I don't feel it's quite working yet - this is mainly the lighting; the character feels like it's cut out of the background at the moment - I think you're almost there but the colours and light of the forest and the lighting on the creature don't feel the same to me. Maybe some overlay colours onto the beast will help?
