Back to fundementals of colour and greyscale

Ok, why do artists add greytone to there pictures before going to colour. And how is the tansition from greyscale to colour conducted? I have always gone straight to colour, but it seems that I may may be missing out on a lot from not going to greyscale first.

reason why some artist start in gray first is because they need to check their values.  getting your values right is more important than color.  if your values are good than, you can apply any color to it.

check out Hennings values tutorial on his site.  he has a wealth of free tutorials there.

Re: Back to fundementals of colour and greyscale

The problem for me is the fact that colour is three-dimensional: 1-Hue 2-Saturation 3-Value and as reported above getting value right is vital, for me at least. When I try to work in colour from the start I end up chasing errors, I find the hue is right but then when I correct the values the saturation goes haywire and when I improve that I realise that the hues are out again and I'm back to square one. It a bit like failing to do the rubik's cube: you get one "side" but getting the second messes up the first and after doing this a few times you realise why the puzzle was stuffed in the bottom of the drawer. Big Smile

Going from grayscale to colour just lessens the frustration a little. But only a little. As for techniques, start off with a colour layer or some gradient maps and see where it takes you.
