A bit of a knees up

    Hey all.

I'm trying to improve my anatomy skills, particularly knees and elbows. Unfortunately, while I can find plenty of references for the leg in general, it is nearly always shown straight/standing so I'm finding it hard to understand how the anatomy changes when the leg is bent. Can anybody recommend any good sources or studies that might help me get to grips with this particular joint?

What you need is... a mirror. Unless you don't happen to have legs, in which case I apologise and retract my statement.

The library!! Get a good anatomy book! And also check which way the foot is pointed. I find that the calf muscle responds more to the foot.

D'oh! I can't believe I never thought of the library. To make it worse, there is one only a couple of minutes walk from work. Thanks for that dreamer and thanks for the tip about calf muscles.

Banj, I'm really after something that looks at how it all works under the skin and I don't fancy peeling my own leg open. I know, it's a poor excuse and just shows I'm not dedicated enough to my art.

I've got a few of the bodyworks workshops that appeared in IFX, but typically I'm missing the ones that covered the legs. Does anybody know what issue/s they were in?

The 'legs' issue was IFX 39.

    Hey matey,

I've been doing alot of life drawing and like you i can hardly ever find what im after. However amazon has a few good life studies books. One in particular comes with a cd to pop into your pc and it turns the figure 360 degrees and also zooms in. And as crazy as it might sound if you have a woman in your house who buys fasion mags i find them excellent for artwork. But i'd definitly recomend the books on amazon. Just type in " nude naked and life" as key words and it'll bring up a huge variety.

I spend all my time with model/fantasy artwork so anything i can help with give us a shout.

Thanks Ciderman, I'll try and keep a look out for those books.

    Hi

the 'virtual pose' series give you a book and a cd with 360 rotational images of models but not the anatomy level you are looking for.

Some of the discount book shops often have Greys Anatomy or a version of it.

As said before, a good mirror is a very good cost effective start

An Atlas of Anatomy for the Artist

Great book. It was required by my teachers at American Academy of Art. I still have it many years later.

I also believe the Bridgeman books are some of the best out there.
