I just bought artrage 2.5 to unlock all the features and I'm a bit perplex on how to use the program. I'm used to working on photoshop; sketch, greyscale and then colors... But of course, that don't work in artrage and I'm just not sure how to go about things, so far, anything I tried in there looked like if colorful puke. x_x any tips?

Greyscale and then colors? More info please. Do you mean you create your image in greyscale and then use, for example, an Overlay Layer, to add color? If so, then you can do that in Artrage. On the other hand, Artrage seems to me to be more of a straightforward painting application - you use "pigment" to lay down color and mix it with other color using the brushes and palette knife, etc.

Yup, like Joe said, you can do the greyscale to colour thing in Artrage. It has the same set of layer blending modes as Photoshop. The brushes obviously work in a slightly different way, but it can be done because I have done it myself.

I've been playing with it since yesterday now but somehow, no mather how much time I put on something, it seeem to remain very clonky, sketchy and poorly refined... x_x am I just trying to go against the medium? Should I change software?

I think you may have Photoshop Syndrome. Just keep saying to yourself - "Not all paintings should look like they were done in Photoshop". You may come round to liking Artrage. As far as I can see there isn't much wrong with the image you are showing.

totaly lol Which isn't a good thing when you're trying to switch software x_x

 But that said, I don't want to painting to look like if it was done in photoshop. It's accually a piece of decor of a 2D game set in renaiscence, so it'd be nice if there was a bit of a painting feel to it... but not like if it was made in gouache. something like there would be nice:

is it doable in artrage? Is there a way to tune the brush to be maybe more like watercolor rather then oil? Any tips on how to make the program work for me would be great, it's not the software that has a problem, it's me and I need to get over it because I can't afford buying a 700$ photoshop liscence lol

I've had it for ages, freiheit, but I only fire it up now and again for fun. I should do more with it because its brush engine is actually one of the best on the market and can reproduce oils very nicely. I know that's not what you want at the moment but it's worth experimenting with. I'm looking forward to the release of Artrage 3 because that will have a watercolor brush by all accounts.

I love speed paintings and rought painterly pieces but mine doesn't have the aestetic... I think it's because the atmosphere is a bit poor maybe?  Ithink I'm going to post the piece on some critic forums.

Simon Dominic uses Artrage quite a bit and I think its testament to its effectiveness that I find it hard to tell what is Painter and what is Artrage in his galleries.

well I'm getting more and more comfortable with the program! It's a really nice software... hopefully one day i'll be able to make stuff as good as Simon! There's one thing though...and if it's in the manual just kick my ass and tell me to stop being lazy... but is there a way to make the program compatible with intuos4's little wheely-thing? It works for the zoom, but not for the rotation... I don't know if it's something that can be change or can't because intuos4 was made after artrage...

I realize these tuts deal with cartoon painting in artrage, but his blending techniques are pretty enlightening. Hope this helps.
