    Spellbound

    Attachment: dungeon.jpg

Hello all, my name is Richard, I joined this site about 5 months ago and have recently added a couple of pics to my homepage. I am pretty new at creating pics, which are usually comps of other photos as my painting skills are somewhat non existant, but am working on it. This is my latest pic, I am uploading it here as I would love to receive some feedback/advice, so if anyone has a spare minute or two would you mind letting me know what you think. All comments welcome.

    Thank you, Rich

    Re: Spellbound

Hi and welcome. Some crits. First, the light in the room and on the figure doesn't match. The room is to dark in proportion to the amount of light on the figure. You could solve that by making the beam ligther if you want the room this dark. Also with that much"dead" space, you would gain on litghing up parts of the room and reveal more of the interior. Second, the composition is out of balance. Move the figure and the light beam more to the right, or let the beam come more from straight above. As it is now, the picture is to heavy on the left side making it somewhat uncomfortable to look at. A picture with this much "dead" space needs a 200% tihgt composition. Also think about contra lines. Now the most visible comp line is diagonal from the top left to bottom right. If you say move the picture on the wall a bit higher and to the rigth, you will get a secondary comp line going the oposite way. A contra line. I honestly don't know if this is something that's a part of the composition rules, it's just something I come up with on my own. But it works really great. A good picture is all about lines. Both visible and invisible.  Other than that is a good idea.

though Geir suggests lighting up the room more to help with the deadspace I'd actually recommend cropping the image. I like the girl in the image but I find she appears quite small because of all the space around her.

Hmm... you know, I see my screens have been really fucked up. Had to calibrate thema while after I looked at this the last time. It was way to dark. Now I can see it much clearer. And now I think I agree with fabled. The way it looked with dark screens, it would work with what I suggested. But not now.
