    Elite (Updated)

    Attachment: EliteFINAL.jpg

Hello! A very long time since a post from me now, but now I actually got a new drawing!

Spent a good while on this, quite a few ref's and some Royalte Free images and textures used. This is my best yet =)

    And again, sorry for watermark!

    Re: Elite

I love the lighting the rendering. The textures add great detail to the image, too.

However, the perspective is not as well planned as it could be. The car seems way too small compared to the figure.

    Re: Elite

    Thank you.

Yeah, the perspective isn't really perfect, I know. I am just so sick of this image and making the perspective right would take so much work and re-painting. The car is in the mid-ground, that's why it's smaller as it's farther away from the figure.

    Re: Elite

Why are you sick of this image? I think it looks great! Don't be too hard on yourself!

When I get tired of my work, I just go watch a DVD or take a shower. Sometimes you lose interest of something when you work on it for too long, and any more effort put into it would be wasted because they wouldn't be your best.

    Re: Elite

Nice lighting Daniel. I would agree that the car is too small for the distance/perspective (or the guy is too big depending on your point of view). Car is very nicely rendered though.

    Re: Elite

definitely is a pretty good image. one thing that caught me though is that the poster behind the guy is tilted toward him. it kind of unballances the image. I think it'd be better off if you tilted the poster away from him.

Okay, fixed some stuff, changed the tilting on the poster as Fabled said I should do, I made some changes to the perspective (Side walk, building in the back and tilted the helmet a bit upwards.) Also added some more glow from the scope on the gun, some smoke all around the image, where the mag-light glows on the gun I added some more texture, made the car a tad bigger and made some light changes on it, and some other small tweaks.

    Re: Elite

I do think the weakest point of this pic is the perspective. I'm no good at perspective either, but there's a bit of 3D software called Google Sketchup which is pretty good for quickly creating a mockup of your intend scene to use as a reference. I've used it a couple of times, and it helped me a lot.

Here's a quick mockup of your scene (or how I would have done it at least). Click it for a larger version.

It's not perfect, but you get the idea.

By the way, I'm not expecting you make these changes to this pic at all, this tip is for future reference.

    Re: Elite

I made a little diagram for the car size issue.

    Re: Elite

Thanks Philby, though that isn't what the perspective really looks like in my image. Just look at this persp. guide Charco made me so I could see what was wrong with the perspective. http://charco.deviantart.com/art/CRIT-ELITE-by-Daniel-Hovdahl-96902224

    Re: Elite

The perspective is correct in your image. It's the size of your car that's not quite right.

    Re: Elite

Fair enough, all I really wanted to show was how Sketchup can be helpful.

The pavement (sidewalk if you're American) still looks off to me somehow though, even looking at that other crit.

    Re: Elite

If it's any bigger, it get's too dominant. I already made it a bit bigger in the update :)

    Re: Elite

I know your mind has been made up, but please hear me out just this once. This is supposed to be a realistic painting, right? To make it work, then, you will have to draw things correctly, including their sizes. You can't use size hierarchy as the reason why you distorted certain thing's size. You can probably get away with it if it wasn't obvious, but this car issue is pretty obvious, preventing this image to become a superb illustration. You have a highly detailed soldier, very good looking smoke, flashlight shooting a beam of light, nice textures everywhere, light coming from a distance... and among all these great things, bang! A super tiny car.

I don't think the car is going to get too dominant at all, actually.  I did a quick tweaking. See if you like it.

    It's not too bad, right?
