I used to like Akira a whole lot, but it now seems a little outdated with newer, fancier anime coming out. The same can be said about Ghost in the Shell.
My latest favorite is The Melencholy of Suzumiya Haruhi. What a great show. The art is not revolutionary or anything but its attention to detail makes it a very enjoyable experience.
I must say that I did not enjoy Akira at all....maybe because it is very old and the new stuff I've seen does not compare. I love alot of animes: Wolf's rain is one of my favourites, Hellsing, Midori days, Samurai X, Elfen lied, Claymore- another one of my favourites, because of the amazing characters and beautiful style, Naruto is quite a fun series to watch, my hime, full metal panic....etc....there is just so much out there....it does inspire my art up to a point *There is always room for improvement*
Akira, Ghost in the shell, Black Jack, Ghost in the shell, Spirited Away, Howl's moving castle, Vampire Hunter D, Elfen Lied, Fullmetal Alchemist, Gravitation... many more =3
Akira made an ever-lasting impression on me, of course, had never seen anything like it back then...Lately I have discovered Hayao Miyazakis movies, like Spirited Away and Moving Castle, love the imagination and style in these !
I was also rather impressed by the computer-animated version of Appleseed - very beautiful !
And someone who I just have to mention is Cobra, coolest anime-character ever...
And I just remembered an old anime that I really loved when I was little. Fist of the North Star!
Yeah, it is possibly one of the most upsetting films you will ever see, but you just follow it up by watching My Neighbour Totoro afterwards to cheer yourself up again. I believe Miyazaki said they should be viewed together as companion pieces anyway.
I still think Akira still stands up very well now. Ghost in the Shell is OK and GITS 2 was fine too, but I've always thought they were a little overrated.
Others I like are Patlabor 1 and 2, Wings of Honneamise (maybe a bit on the slow side), Blood: The last Vampire (brilliant but short), anything by Miyazaki, and I started watching Paranoia Agent not so long ago.
Really didn't like Fist of the North Star though (and the live action one was even worse).
I second Banja about Patlabor. I loved the movie. Alot of people criticize it about being slow, but I thought as I watched it there is just enough subtle things going on in the background that progress the story to the dramatic ending.
i've never actually seen an anime should i seek professional help?
You should definitely check out a Miyazaki film like Spirited Away, or another movie like Perfect Blue.
Don´t worry Kaz, I was 40 when I read my first Manga and saw my first Anime, there is a wonderful world of imagination and fantasy to discover here. I belive Miayzakis movies are good to begin with for us "elderly", they are visually beautiful an poetic, and there is not so much violence in them as in many other animes.
The anime "The grave of the fireflies" wich has been mentioned is a sad, sad movie, however a rather realistic story of the fate of some children in Japan after the end of the second world war...I am not ashamed of confessing that it actually made me cry...
You should definitely check out the Studio Ghibli collection which includes the afore mentioned "Spirited Away", "Howls Moving Castle" and many more which are great!
Ninja scroll is a fantastic blood fest! Love it!
Legend of the Overfiend 1-3 are messed up but really cool! Not to be watched with minors as they are REALLY disturbing. (the films, not the Minors!)
*edit* Weird, I double posted so when I went to delete the first it came up with -"Since this post has no replies no children will be deleted.
