    Gruntsposion WIP (Halo Humour Fanart)

After reading the latest article in the magazine about Humour, I began work on this little piece.

For those not familiar with the Halo franchise, these Aliens use Plasma Grenades which can stick to their target before detonating. The idea behind this scene is that one Grunt in particular is having problems with his throwing. I tried to get some expression in the other characters, such as the red grunt laughing and the Blue Elite looking embarrassed. Artwork created with an initial Brush-pen and pencil sketch which I hated, and then simply painted over EVERYTHING with sampled colors.

it's a good start here but keep one thing in mind. right now your 3 characters seem to blend a bit into one another because their skin tones are similar despite them being on different planes. keep your lightsource in mind and judge the skin tones accordingly. depending on where they are in the picture, their skin tones would no doubt be a little darker or lighter than the others.

I think the new Coke-a-Cola commercial says it all...."Now they know...who's game it is!!!!" OH CANADA!!!! Smile YEH!!!!

Very good point, thanks for that!

I'm also tweaking the characters so they have more of a discernible Line to them, as is my usual style. Is this a good or bad thing?

hey, nothing wrong with having defining lines. if you look at a lot of the older comic book styles, they all had defined lines. alot of comics still do.

Started blocking in the color and detail on the orange Grunt, added some depth to the background, and added the Banshee (purple aircraft) to the scene.

The cloud filter sky is Obviously filler. Im going to be trying to draw in some clouds based off a tutorial in the mag.

Re: Gruntsposion WIP (Halo Humour Fanart)

Full view of everything up to date, with shadows, detailing and composition. Obviously the next phase is the fix the sky, with some painted clouds and perhaps some snow, considering the fact that its a snow based location. http://www.halomovies.org/index.cfm?fid=1471

Also, I'm currently changing the Orange grunts gas-mask, as at the moment all my reference pics show different types, and I'm struggling to get an accurate version.

Re: Gruntsposion WIP (Halo Humour Fanart)

My computer keeps cutting out due to the heat, so I sadly cant get much done before Photoshop blacks out, but heres a quick update. I made use of the brushes in issue 22 by Marta Dahlig on the Plasma Grenade, as well as the ice patterns and the very simple snow overlay. I am planning on hand painting the 'main' snow forms on a seperate layer, what exists at the moment is just for some texturing.

Looking decent so far. Don't forget the shadows being cast on the ground though. That will go a long way to making the elements of the scene come together.

this is definitely coming along and it's improving. I agree though that it really needs the shadows. right now the one in the front isn't really fitting into the image because it really isn't grounded. adding the shadows I think will really help fix this.

Re: Gruntsposion WIP (Halo Humour Fanart)

Sorted out the shadows, re-did the snow texture and started work on some basic cloud shapes. Currently wondering about painting some snowflakes in the air, as it could make the picture a little too busy. Also redid the plasma trail as the Grunt runs hysterically in circles. Apparently it happens alot in game. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=tENIDrHdipo
