Re: 11th Bi-Weekly Rebels Challenge "Crypto-Zoology" WIPs Thread

    My sources tell me that...

Cryptozoology (from Greek κρυπτός, kruptos, "hidden" + zoology; literally, "study of hidden animals") is the study of and search for animals which fall outside of contemporary zoological catalogues. It consists of two primary fields of research:

    • The search for living examples of animals taxonomically identified through fossil records, but which are believed to be extinct.
    • The search for animals that fall outside of taxonomic records due to a lack of empirical evidence, but for which anecdotal evidence exists in the form of myths, legends, or undocumented sightings.

Those involved in cryptozoological study are known as cryptozoologists; the animals that they study are often referred to as "cryptids".

So, believed-to-be extinct creatures or creatures of myth, i think !? Confused

What a lovely term used above for mythical beasts  "animals that fall outside of taxonomic records"

Great topic Mr Groovy Big Smile

Re: 11th Bi-Weekly Rebels Challenge "Crypto-Zoology" WIPs Thread

Hey guys, try not to get to hung up on the word myth that is in that definition. Look at the second definition:

    • The search for animals that fall outside of taxonomic records due to a lack of empirical evidence, but for which anecdotal evidence exists in the form of myths, legends, or undocumented sightings.

More along this line. Big foot, the yeti, the abominable snowman, the Loch Ness monster (nessy) or my favorite, a legend in my neck of America, the Chupacabra. So things like unicorns, dragons and fairies could be considered, I wanted to take us more in the line of animals that people actually think could be "out there."

Did you know that the Tasmanian Tiger now catagorized as extint is thought to still be in exsistence by some Cryptozoologists.

I think I'm going to do a giant squid. Which I fully believe exsists somewhere at the bottom of the ocean. The biggest found came in at 14 meters (46 ft) long but I bet there's much bigger down there. I'll prove it in paint!

Those squid always scared the heck out of me. I mean hmm... lets look out the submarine window wait its blocked... by a twenty foot EYE!!! Anyway I might go for something along the lines of the dinosaurs still thought to exist in the jungles of the world.

This is a brilliant challenge that will allow me to try something completely different. I'm just gonna create some hybrid, cross breed, made up concoction......this one should be fun.

    nice start fillen...

apparently somewhere out on the moors (considered) close to the region i live in theres meant to be some sort of 'power' cat....rips things up....moves at speed....noise like a dino....it gets the odd feature on the local news...."someones pitbull got attacked here"..."i saw a huge black leg poking from a bush there"...."look at this footage of an animal stalking just over my fence".....sounds like fun....strange its never attacked a human.....or just good luck....

anywhoo....thought id do a little sketchy....this may not be anything close to resembling my final piece but it got me started....
