Fightclub - Hotel Lobby

IFX Fightclub Tournament

We are resuming the regular IFX Fightclub rounds with a tournament… I’m taking names up until midnight on Friday the 29^th May.

I will announce the fight schedule after this point, and then the first battle will commence on the 1^st June. Rounds will now last 2 weeks. This will be an elimination tournament, working towards semi-finals and a ultimately a final to determine a champion.

For anyone not familiar with IFX fightclub, let me explain a little…

During a round, two IFX members have a draw-off contest. Each member has a character (of their own design) and they each create an image of their two characters in battle. Votes are then cast by other members to determine the winner of the fight.

To take part in this Fightclub, all you need do is post an image of your character (preferably full bodyshot, in colour, showing size/scale). Please also include a short backstory telling us a little about your character. Your character must be of your own creation – nothing copyrighted or plagiarised please. Hello there IFX Forums, my name is Mark Penman, I had some of my work published in the IFX this month.

Shortly after finding this out I recieved word that Id been accepted into the monthly Zuda Comics competition with some of the characters that had appeared on my IFX page. The competition is vote based and Im currently doing the rounds letting people know about my comic to try and drum up support.

Heres the synopsis-

It is the latter end of the eighteen hundreds, an age where science and the occult blossom together in a terrifying way. Items of great otherworldly power lay scattered around the world and as warfare changes the learned and powerful look to these strange artefacts to better their countries armaments.
Cue Peabody & D’Gorath Britain’s foremost paranormal antiquarians. Taking on the assignments that are too weird and dangerous for the average tea sipping gentry they find themselves on the forefront of this paranormal arms race going toe to toe with esoteric beings and rival antique hunters all for Queen and Country!

Deviants on Tour

Has anyone else seen the announcement on DA that they are going out on Tour? Right now they are in Sydney and future tour dates/locations are kinda sketchy. It looks like a relaxed get together and if anyone goes I'd love to hear about it. Also, if they do come to England, will IFX be there to give them a warm welcome? would love to see some pictures/write up of it in the magazine or one of the blogs here.

Geir's gallery exhibitions. (Huge thread)

Ok -I announced some time ago that I have two exhibitions this year. Here is the first on.(It's a big thread, so becourse of the risk of loosing all While I write I'll do a post'n'edit).

This exhibition is a joint exhibition with five artists in a gallery called Gallery Rallaren in Odda. Jar - Hugo Låstad as main exhibiter with paintings and drawings, Harald Koldrup with paintings, Bente Haugland with sewn fabric pictures, Vidar Mæland with bronze sculptures and paintings and me Geir Opdal with drypoint prints and a pencil drawing. The latter some of you will recognice:)

Jarl - Hugo and I also did a performance together with Jarl - hugo's brother Geir Låstad (Rieg) ( the piece he'll be playing is The absynth ritual). It is a collaborative performance about interaction between different art forms and styles. Electronic music and jawsharp and live paintig. I start off with a solo act with jawsharp, and than the electronic music of Jarl - Hugo is being played back on his synthesizers along with him painting a picture live inspired by the music. Half way into the performance, Rieg takes over and plays live his own electronic music. I than improvise on top of that with my jawsharp. All the time I'm watching if Jarl - Hugo needs anything like more paint, painting mediums wine or such. The whole act takes 35 minutes. So this can also be called analogue speedpainting:)

Here Jarl - Hugo does the last minute sewing together of his music and testing fi the syntezisers is working proporly. These are all good old 70's synts:) See the little grey oldy calculator thingy with the ash tray on top? Thats the brain of it all:)

Ok. So here we go before with a before and after packing picture of the car.

Ok -I know this thread is about the exhibition, but I have to show some of the nature we drove by (I'll withstain from posting to many. And I took alot:))

We drove though about ten of these charming little tunnels on our three/four hour trip (and we drove slow be course of our load)

Take a look at this wally. See how it just ends in these huge mountains? And belive me, they looked a lot nigher than they look in the photo. Well, I knew Odda was on the other side, but how were we to get there? It looked impossible to get passed these rocks. Well, when we got to the end of the road, the giant mining dwarfs of Norway had been so kind as to make a small tunnel the execkt length of 11150 meters:)

And than the contrast of the small industri town of Odda. Some of these old iron smelting factorys (don't know the right word) are amazing to look at. Like a cyberpunk scene. This is one still in operation (actually not sure if this has anything to do with iron smelting though).

Finally we got to the gallery:) The nature here got even closer. In fact, while we were outside taking a rest from haning up the exhibition went an avalanche further in the wally. Some of springs last snow. It sounded like a plane went through the sound barrier. And we could see the snow cloud through the trees. It was.. wow! Photographs surely does this nature not enough justice.

Here we have (from left) One of the gallery owners, Tor Helge Øygarden who also is a very good photographer. Than we have Jarl - hugo Låstad and he's wife Eva Karin. The first paintings is in, and planning has comanced.

My turn. Here I am trying out my wall. I only have five pictures here. I have two paintings in the shop part of the gallery.

Time for a break and some BBQ. Eva is watching over the grill.

Here Harald Koldrup has gotten some help to deside how to mount is paintings (Harald is actually one of Odd Nerdrums first pupils).

Over to the opening. We could have wished for a bigger audience, but there was a confirmation i Odda that day, and it was one of the first really good sunny spring days there. So you see, the composition was hard

The older white haired man on the left of the collum is my father, and the woman on the right with her back turned to us is my mother talking with Jarl - Hugo.

The artists from left. Kjerstin Njåstad (private pupil of Låstad exhibiting one painting), me (here you finally see the whole of the disco king:)), Jarl - Hugo Låstad, Harald Koldrup and Bente Haugland. Vidar Mæland could come to Odda. The last one is the other gallery owner Ingunn Olsen Mossefin.

Now Rieg has started playing, and I'm improvising on top of that with my jawsharp, all while Jarl - Hugo is painting. By the way, he's using oils.

The bohemian is in dire need of more wine, so I spring to help. Little did I know that it was all over just a couple of minutes after:)

Me first:)

The four first ones is from an ongoing serie about the Hammerheads. I have been so lucky as to have premission to portray them, IF I do not reveal were their world is. They are very welcoming and like humans, but are afraid we will destoy their world.

This is called: Iskovar's highest wish in life was to be a human.

This is called: To read would have been an impossibility for the Hammerheads if it hadn't been for the Eyebird and the Translation snail.

And: The Craftsman.

This is: The Eyebird in it's natural environment are sosial birds, that feeds from seeing.

This some of you might recognize. It's The drone keeper in a pencil version about 110 cm in hight.

I might post some bigger versions later. Details do disapper some here:)

The actual mouting of my works. I got pleased with my placing. Between the two others colorful paintings, my subtle B&W's stood out really well. And I usually exhibit coloful paintings also. So this was a fun experience for me:) It's also the first time I exhibit both my drypoint prints and the Hammerheads. They got good feedback:)

Than it's all over, and it's time for the opening party. We were all kind of tired, so it did'nt last much longer than 'til about 2 inthe night.

The charming laghing lady is the inkeeper of the camping were we stayed. She's coming with toilet paper, witch she'd conviniently forgot to buy before we came. Everybody run to the toilets!

HOW TO ENTER:
1. Register to www.conceptart.org/forums \
2. Visit the contest forums http://conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=158 to see all the great details and info!
3. Create your artwork and submit your final entry in jpeg form at 1000 pixels wide to contest@conceptart.org (include your full name, conceptart.org username, address, and phone number in the email with the entry attached). Final submissions are due no later than July 31 2009 (central standard time)

JUDGING PERIOD:
Judging will take place on the date of August 7th 2009. Peoples Choice judging poll will open on August 1 2009 and will close on August 7 2009.

RULES:
1. Multiple entries per participant are fine.
2. Artwork must be 100% original and your own. It can contain no copyrighted materials or unapproved likenesses owned by others. ARTWORK MUST BE ORIGINAL.
3. Any media is fine. No artists are discriminated against based on media.
4. Sponsors may use image to promote the Artwork and the Artist in any form or media. Any usage shall contain web link from artist who created the work. No promotional usage by sponsors shall be done unless artist web link is present on or near the Artwork image.
5. Artists shall retain all commercial rights to their images. Sponsors (Wacom, ConceptArt.Org) may use the work to promote the artist and the artwork/contest/Intuos 4 in advertising, promotion, news, media, or other forms.
6. Images may be black and white or full color

I'm thinking of going to have a look around, just wondering if anyone else has heard of it/ is going. :)
