THE CHALLENGE RULES;

WE ARE HOPING THIS WILL BE A BUSY THREAD SO PLEASE LIMIT YOUR POSTED IMAGES TO 150K MAXIMUM FILE SIZE (If you need advise on how to do this PM me or post in a help thread for the software you are using)

From the 1st of January 2009 you are challenged to post a small sketch in this collaborative sketchbook.

1 point for each consecutive day you create a new sketch.

Post on the day where possible. If you cant then post your sketches when you get the chance.

Make a note of your day / point number with each post.

If you miss a day your current score re-sets to zero. (Keep a seperate tally of your total for the year when you continue)

You can start after the 1st of January and join the fun, but you'll have to wait till next year to get a maximum score of 365.

365 will be hard to achive as many things could get in the way.

P.s. Honesty is up to you, this is just for fun / personal challenge of those who choose to accept it.

Hi! And welcome to my sketchbook!

My name is Erik! ExiLi is like a short version for Erik Lindfors, so feel free to call me Erik if you so wish
I'm studying 3D-animation in Sweden, and I partly need to be a good artist for work, but drawing for me is first of all because I think it's fun, relaxing and awesome.
I was drawing a lot when i was little, mostly comics and manga stuff. Then i went to a music school(age 16-18). Didn't draw so much for a couple of years but now I'm back again and loving it.
I'm trying to take drawing more seriously now, and I have a lot of catching up.

So in this sketchbook i'm looking for critique and advices, or if you just wanna come in and say Hi, that would be great as well

i love sketching. i love it more than finished drawings, its like a constant stream of concsiousness that just flows out onto the paper, and it tells a long and ever changing story of what you were thinking at that moment you were sketching. ill post some of my old as well as new sketches in here, and hopefully itll be filling up quick because i do a hell of alot of sketching, so enjoy!

New Year's Day 2009

We spent the afternoon on Tynemouth beach so I took my sketchbook so trad pencil on paper wearing gloves and my fingers were still freezing. Tried to capture the canoeists and surfers in the distance lots more people than pictured. and the ship waiting for high tide to come in.

Hello, well rather than clutter up the "Mentor" thread with ALL my work - best to keep it useful for others =)

So to document my progress this year I thought I'd start a sketchbook, kinda blog my progress 2009-2010 - eventually I'd love a job in games, but I'm a long long way off but gonna try my hardest =)

I am studying animation til September, so there's going to be a LOT of figure work in here =)

I want to draw my own characters in any poses out of my head - that's the goal. Slightly secondary goal is environments, which I want to work on in any free time I might have!

Character work is hopefully gonna be used in my animation somehow - excuse the muscly men, skimpy women, and guns etc, but I wanna work in games so need some relevent stuff; will be doing more personal work too =) (beleive it or not I don't play games anymore, but I grew up with 'em and would still love to be involved in their creation!

I am starting life drawing twice a week starting tonight, lol lets see how that turns out - it's MUCH harder in real life >.<

Tried digital painting in Painter - it's very hard, I don't know how to paint in real life either so I need a lot of work in this program. I also tried photoshop, but found painter more fun =)

Learning to draw heads from my head - read the Loomis book on heads, so I know how to construct them now - these are all terrible, but it was excellent practice - I'm a bit better now.

Ok, all the images are below are completely out of my head, no ref at all - wanted to test if I'd learnt anything from posemaniacs - and I have - I am much better than before - they aren't great but the shapes I am much more proficient at. You should have seen my drawings from memory 6 weeks ago. It's LOL and a half. Excuse the weirdness of some of these, doodles really, kinda thing I used to do in lessons at school =0

My first character - pose and character completely from memory - used a Hogarth book to check where some of the muscles should be.

Had a go on Painter last night with my new character because I was so excited I'd made something I could call my own =) Checked my watch was 4am, but I had some fun with light and colour - dunno if any a developeable - I like the black/dark ones though.

New character I made today - don't like the tatoo I'm gonna re-do that. I don't like the pose either.

Used Bridgeman for reference on the muscles, everything else is no ref.

Male anatomy is going to take me a very very long time to memorize, now I realise women are alot easier!

Prefer it cropped.

Ok, so here we go...Hello, boys and girls! I`m Marko AKA Pxel Slayer, and this is my own little "so-you-think-this-is-art" sketchbook. My second one, actually. I have one at CA.org, but after posting day after day after day for...umm...5 days? I got one reply. That`s right. One. What, in heavens name, does a guy have to do to get some CC, huh? Then I remembered an advice that was given to me by EmiliaPaw back at dArt, in moment when I felt completely depressed and frustrated, that there`s this site with great people who are willing to help out with their CC, and that with time they`ll grow on you. And, since I`ve became quite fond of Emilia in the mean time (amazing how a complete stranger can have such an amazing positive influence on one), here I am! Wether you like it or not...:)

As for my art...sheesh, to upload it all here would take some time...so be a happy little camper and visit http://markothesketchguy.deviantart.com/gallery/ and have a look...As soon as I finish something "representable" (yea, right), I`ll post it here. Which should be tomorrow or even today, as I have no social life what so ever. Actually...I am working on something right now, I could use your advice on - it still very rough, but I`m drawing w/o references (bad boy, bad boy!) and need a fresh pair of eyes...I always had issues with anatomy, which isn`t bad for my college (I study fashion design), but let`s face it - women DON`T have legs that go up to their necks!

Ok, I guess this would be it, for starters...Now if I could just figure out how to upload files...hmmmm*....

I printed his scan directly onto comic book layout paper. Than i went to town after a little research on chinese wash painting.
i love the google.
BLAIR SMITH - COLORS - (Gouache) -Gouache is an opaque watercolor paint. Whereas transparent watercolors allow you to see the “white” of the paper below the paint, gouache can be applied in solid colors. This allows an artist to paint in layers from dark to light.

This is from a crappy pencil I brought into photoshop and finished. The reference is from an old 1978 nude theory mag. This is purely practice. I have started rereading Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain... I spent the morning drawing this image upside down. I'm actually utterly disappointed...it looks nothing like the ref.

Welcome,

during my short time here and looking around online I have come to realize that the only way to really improve my drawing is to...draw. My problem is that I get an idea, draw a stick figure...and leave for another project that seem more tempting.

If I keep all these different "projects that began as sketches and never was finished" I think that would be great for two reasons:

1) I could have them as a reference and see how my drawing (hopefully) improves over time.

2) I could get inspired to actually pick up and finish the sketch for that old started project

Therefore what will be found in this thread is either:

- The beginning of a new sketch

- The continuation of a previous sketch in here

- A finished sketch

At the moment I don't know where the digital cam is so I'll start with some digital sketches, would be exciting to add something from my "real" sketchbook as well. We'll see - depends how the rest of you do (it's a digital art magazine after all...)

Apart from drawing much, one way to improvement is feedback - so all C&C:s are very welcome :-)

I hope for this to be a LONG thread in which I turn from noobdoodler M to drawmaster B (hmm...did I mean THAT long?)

Anyways, it feels like a fun thing and hopefully it will be fun for others as well to see what's going on in this unorganized but creative mind

Welcome, fellow drawer and/or painter

the idea for this thread is simple:

- One of us posts a sketch subject

- The rest of us get at least 24 hours to draw/paint the subject (in any media - traditional or digital)

- When those 24 hours have passed anyone may post a new subject, for everybody to sketch for the coming 24 hours. The last posted subject will remain active until a new one is posted.

- One important thing: If you feel like picking, drawing and posting an earlier subject, by all means do so. Main goal is to get us inspired to draw and hopefully learn something from every drawing. Will try to make a list of different subjects in different categories that have been covered.

Well, I guess that's it. I suggest that the new sketch subject should be announced in a separate post, in bold letters

Purpose of this is:

- To get new ideas for things to draw, leaving that all-too-familiar comfort zone behind from time to time. (That's the main point, not having to wonder what to draw for that important daily practice - or even the daily collaborative sketchtread, this could actually complement that one nicely).

- To have as little or as much (at least 24 hours) time that one wants/needs for a sketch/drawing/painting

- Through critting each other (much encouraged but not necessary - we are all busy people...) improving our skills

- Getting into the habit of and improving from daily sketching of a suggested subject (that we probably wouldn't have considered drawing otherwise)

- To have a jolly good time (why even bother if you don't enjoy what you're doing? :-D)

Remember: If it's a subject you find boooring you can make this thread a better place by passing by the next day and tell us that it's a "super-cool-assassin-robot-with-ten-plasma-drooling-heads" we should be sketching! No limits - apart from what's considered appropriate at the site of course.

Hope many will want to join in this, so the subjects will become varied, fun and challenging.

Hi there guys/girls,

Now before anyone says anything, I know my art needs a vast improvement and it's certainly not comparable to any of the stuff I've seen in these forums. I certainly have no delusions about that, so I'm hoping you guys won't savage me too much and I'm looking forward to any help you guys can give. :)

The shape of this monster is admittedly influenced by the more recent Anime Mecha designs, with it's skinny form.

Here's a quicky Goddess/Sorcerous I made for my first post. The first mistake I noticed upon flipping the image, was that the neck is incorrectly positioned and should be moved further to the right. The face on the left is also far too masculine.

Hi all,

Welcome to my Sketchdump.

First of all, a bit about me -

My name's Chrissy, I'm a junior high student living in Sydney, AUS and I LIKE ART. [it's nice.]

I'm self-taught and I mostly deal with graphite and digital art nowadays but I do like to experiment for some variation, I am a bit of an otaku ~~[so you may expect fanart scribbles of the manga boy variety]~~ but I also do some realism and semi-realism.

Well anyway, an empty sketchbook is a sad one so to start off I'll just up some older sketches and things so get it started then hopefully add a sketch or two daily~! <3

Old drawing from 2008, I tried to sign with my Vietnamese name [phail] [BoA Kwon]

This was a sketch I did a long time ago in one sitting listening to DBSK songs on repeat for about 3hrs. [That's my weekends :D] [Kim JaeJoong]

OK. Now this Marilyn was my first-ever A4 portrait thing, back in 2006 [the memories!] And yes the paper is a bit yellow, it was Daler-Rowney.

Ok so this one is probably my most recent digital painting. [Done for the IFX 50th comp!!] It's an original character done pretty much from imagination but for the hands I had myself for reference. [Unfinished]

Assume that the graphite portraits of celebrities are all referenced and anything else is not unless I've said so [I will almost always write if I've used reference, this is mostly for my own record. :P My sketches are also dated most of the time, again for record].

I'm going to try and post daily and hopefully be able to look back and see some badass improvement. :D

Well, I had a flash yesterday evening and couldn't put my pencil down. Here are the results.

Two illustrations for my still to come website. I thought illustrated links would be nice. Stanley will be quite present throughout the site.
