Tarot Bi-Weekly Challenge # 9 - The Sun - WIPS

For those of you who don't know about this, we are going to have a bi-weekly challenge to depict a tarot card from the Major Arcana. This will last approximately a year. At the end of the year we will have the full Major Arcana. Two wips and a final are required for entry.

The only real stipulation is that The final image must be in the form of a card, with the card name and number, not just a painting
I will give you a brief meaning, but it's probably a good idea to do your own research.

Hello!

My activity on the forums is minimal - I've been trying to change that but life gets in the way. I am incredibly grateful for any feedback!

The top image is one I've been stuck with for a year now - I'm not sure how to handle the lighting. The bottom I recently finished. However it's composition seems quite awful. The colour perhaps?

How to paint partially wet hair??

Hi all,

This is my first ever fourm post, having just registered on ImagineFX.

I have a problem that I was hoping to get advice on from the community here. I recently finished a painting (below) that overall I am pretty pleased with. However, I had real difficulties painting the hair which is partially dry and partially wet (submerged below the water-line) at the same time. I just don't feel statisfied that I was able to "sell" the effect that well.

I scoured the internet (deviantart) for ages looking for references and tips and tricks, but nothing really came up.

Can anyone offer any advice or put forward some examples of their own which achieves the effect I am after.

Sky Harbor - Seeing It Through to Completion

Last month I decided to enter my very first monthly contest here on the ImagineFX forums. Unfortunately, I blew the conversion from Greenwich Mean Time to North American Pacific Time by not accounting for Daylight Savings Time. In short, I missed the deadline by an hour.

The fact is, the image was still quite a ways from being truly finished. It's still pretty rough in places and missing a lot of things I had planned to include like more airship traffic, not to mention some freaking hand rails! I'd still like to see this through to completion, but I'm hoping I can get some additional feedback about what's working and what isn't from those of you with fresher and more accomplished eyes than my own. One of the main reason I decided to participate in these challenges is to improve my skills and techniques, so please don't hesitate to be brutally honest. I'm uploading the full-size image for maximum scrutiny.

Voluspa's 2011 WIPs & such thread

Last year I set up a list of 14 things I hoped to accomplish during 2010. I managed to check off 12 of them which isn't bad considering I usually only get halfway through any to-do lists of mine... Anyway, I'm starting this year with a similar list, though somewhat shorter and perhaps less specific...

Practice areas:
- Landscapes (not just as backgrounds)
- Shadows, particularly cast shadows - status: ongoing
- Using light more efficiently for both compositions and especially mood
- Continued practice on hands, feet and faces... - status: ongoing (hey, I painted three wrinkly old ladies! that's facial practice for ya)
- More practice on architecture, cityscapes and such...

Specific goals:
- ~~To paint at least one picture with a prehistoric theme~~
- To paint at least one male and one female face each of asian and african people, as practice or in finished pieces... (to avoid the usual caucasian default...) - status: one down, three to go.
- To paint or draw at least one illustration for a book I've read
- ~~To make at least one picture for my own pleasure and not related to any challenges or similar~~
- To make at least one picture that is "natural" rather than fantasy, e.g. landscape, real life animal or similar... (not prehistoric though!)

We'll see how I do this year. I originally intended goals such as "at least three illustrations of books I've read", but I chickened out

For the moment, I ought to finish my ~~dragon hatchling~~ from last year, which wasn't quite as polished as I'd like by the end of the challenge, and finish my Athena speed-portrait that I did just before Christmas. It wasn't all that great, I'll have to see if some rimlights or something can save it... Also just before christmas I started some images for my pet lookups and such at Neopets, which I guess I should work on too. I got a little over-ambitious there, I think. But on the other hand it's fun to paint in a completely different style once in a while...

I decided to start my own thread for my WIPs, drawings and for crit on my work. Hopefully this will help me push my art forward some more.

Thanks to the wonderful peeps on this forum I've managed to get some good pointers on how to improve my work; namley to add narrative to my pieces and charcater/back story/purpose to my critters and characters. Hopefully I cans stick to this. So after getting said pointers I went back and re-evaluated the pictures I was working on. The top sketch is what it looked like before and the colour picture beneath is what has come about after going away and thinking about a story and creating a scene. I'm trying to practice my vector cel shading with this one, so it's looking a bit clean and flat at the moment.

So, this piece is called 'Le Chicken Freak' and basically every year the Chicken Freak, due to some deep repressed issues surrounding easter, decides to don his chicken costume and terrorise the easter bunnies when they hunt for easter eggs. I've been debating about changing the bunnies to people in bunny costumes to mirror the Chicken Freak but I'm still not sure about this. Opinions would be greatly appreciated, as would help with composition as this is my biggest weakness. I'm still in the very early stages here so changes shouldn't be too much of a pain.

So, thanks for viewing and sorry if this wall of text is a bit boring :)

Hello, hope i'm posting this right? I'm trying to learn to paint people better and i'm having trouble painting skin. I know the person isn't realistic but I want to paint her with pretty realistic looking skin. It looks really flat and ugly at the moment but i'm not sure how to go about improving it. Thanks for any tips, they're appreciated!

This is a picture I was commissioned to do by, well, my mom's boyfriend, who clearly likes fishing. Crits are totally welcomed; this is the first time I'm painting a fish, despite my fascination with mermaids.

Edit: Forgot to mention that it IS chasing a fish; I accidentally deleted it, will have to redraw it.

Suggestions on direction?

Trying something different in approach, by not working with a full gray scale, just a sketch, trying to keep it from getting muddy colors. That being said colors are just roughed in, and I got tweaks to do overall as far as the sketch and back ground, kinda correcting things as I go.

I wanted to have a sci=fi, space cowboy type of feel, and while I like the pose and look, its not too space'y. Thought about adding some mechanical feel to her one arm, one being more of a rusted steam punk type of feel, the other being more of a internal robotics, or none at all and just let the guns read as futuristic?

Any thoughts/crits on where I am at are much appreciated.

I've been meaning to have all my stuff in one thread here for ages, now seems like as good a time as any to start it. Here's the early stages of a couple of ideas I have. The first one is Mercy again, based on this pic I saw of Summer Glau (which I also posted in my sketchbook thread).

Not sure what I want her to be wearing yet, though I have a couple of ideas. Here's one of them, her standard battle dress thing:

(Berettas are really f-ing hard to draw at that angle, not for the first I wonder why I don't just have my characters use Glocks :P)

Next up, a sketch of Riddick. I've been wanting to do a Pitch Black drawing for ages, but never got a solid idea down.

I want to post the reference I used, but if I don't go now I'm going to be late for work. More to come later :)

so i have been working on this for a while and it is in my sketchbook in earlier forms . anyway i'm trying to finish the grey scale before i attempt to colour it. anything that stands out to need work please share :)

also if you have any advice on colouring and layers and the such i'd love to here it.
