Title: Gone Fishing
Brief: Sauron and his evil cronies have been defeated, most of the elves have gone boating somewhere to the west, and your favourite character can finally take a break from saving the world. Paint one of the characters (or races) from Tolkien's Middle Earth on his or her fishing holiday. (It is OK to choose one that's technically dead or otherwise gone from Middle Earth.)
Deadline: Midnight (UK) on Wednesday 5th June. There is a 5 minute grace period allowing people to get their posts and links sorted. A moderator will then post a list of valid entries after checking links and voting will last 24 hours. Feedback is welcomed during the voting process.

This month's theme is, curtesy of Cassandre Bolan: Fantasy Self Portrait

"Who do you secretly want to be: an elf from middle earth, a greek goddess, a dragon-riding knight? Time to play dress-up! The portrait can be as formal or as action-packed as you want as long as it depicts your likeness and is fantasy-based, although i'm sure all of us would love to know why you chose the character you did!"

Deadline: Midnight (GMT) on Friday, May 31st.
There is a 5 minute grace period allowing people to get their posts and links sorted. A moderator will then post a list of valid entries after checking links and voting will begin and continue until midnight (GMT) on 7th of the following month. Crits are welcomed during the voting process. Toward the end of the current challenge a new challenge setter will be randomly chosen from those taking part in the WIP thread to set the next monthly challenge, so keep an eye out.

Post your Works in Progress (WIPs) in this thread and your final entry over here.

Two separate wips must be posted in the wip thread and clickable links must be posted in the final thread with the final image. A link is provided below to details of how to do this. All artwork must be the work of the entrant, and both started and completed within the time frame of the challenge. You may only enter 1 entry per challenge, and may only cast 1 set of votes during voting.

Please keep entries and WIPs below 500k and a maximum of 1000 pixels across. Larger files causes problems for all users, especially those on slower connections.

Moderators monitor the voting in these challenges to combat cheating and maintain fairness. We may discount any vote we consider suspicious, and will disregard any attempts at sabotaging the voting, or in any way screwing with these challenges.

A new year and, I have decided, a new thread for my Works in Progress (or possibly Works in Not Much Progress at All). My previous wip thread was set up in 2011 and in two years I didn't manage to check off all the things I had intended to do, so, "wise" from this lesson I'll just refrain from listing anything. I'll just start off with a couple of images, one from the Daily Sketch Thread of 2013 and one that sums up a bunch of old work I've yet to finish.

(Sketches of Nora von Waldstätten, though #1 reminds me more of Chris O'Donnell - #3 is made with the aid of the first 2 but no photo ref... none of them really look like Nora)

(I did finish the two right most images in this one)

Baxter's Wip, Sketches and Crit.

I decided to start my own thread for my WIPs, drawings and for crit on my work. Hopefully this will help me push my art forward some more.

Thanks to the wonderful peeps on this forum I've managed to get some good pointers on how to improve my work; namley to add narrative to my pieces and charcater/back story/purpose to my critters and characters. Hopefully I cans stick to this. So after getting said pointers I went back and re-evaluated the pictures I was working on. The top sketch is what it looked like before and the colour picture beneath is what has come about after going away and thinking about a story and creating a scene. I'm trying to practice my vector cel shading with this one, so it's looking a bit clean and flat at the moment.

So, this piece is called 'Le Chicken Freak' and basically every year the Chicken Freak, due to some deep repressed issues surrounding easter, decides to don his chicken costume and terrorise the easter bunnies when they hunt for easter eggs. I've been debating about changing the bunnies to people in bunny costumes to mirror the Chicken Freak but I'm still not sure about this. Opinions would be greatly appreciated, as would help with composition as this is my biggest weakness. I'm still in the very early stages here so changes shouldn't be too much of a pain.

So, thanks for viewing and sorry if this wall of text is a bit boring :)

Well, decided to start this thread for new works and if anyone has advise or crits, please feel free to share them. ... Had an old thread, but that was under finished works, and don't have a shovel to dig that one up right now. I primarily want to try some other coloring techniques. After seeing how many of the fine folk on here go about this, I want to start trying to work the picture up as a whole. Something I've never done before. The few digitals I've done thus far have been done using what I believe is more like an Airbrush technique, working from back to front, but also working in the details as I go, like when airbrushing. A habit I need to get away from. Just going to start with one of the sketches I did a couple weeks ago. Not sure about the title though. Just threw something on there when I made it.

Right, Here's a sketch for a steampunk character... not too original, but one has to start somewhere!

Just lines at the moment, but let me know what you think.

Because of the nature of having a drawing with such bold and dark lines I think I will do a couple of versions of this in the end. One will keep the lines and be coloured from behind and the other(s) will lose them in favour of more realistic contrast/shadow delineation and overpainting. Let's see how it turns out!

I figure the best way to (re*)introduce yourself to an art community is to post up some sketches.

In order to improve my skill, I've challenged myself to design 151 MLP/Pokemon crossover characters, which should be in colour, identifiable as the Pokemon they represent, and with full backgrounds.

At the moment my paintings take an embarrassingly long time to finish, so I'm primarily looking to improve my speed. I'd also like to squash the most egregious bugs in my general technique, composition and storytelling abilities. Any critiques or advice would be gratefully received.

* Turns out I posted for a while a few years ago. I don't know why I stopped but, for what it's worth, I'm back. Hi.

I figured maybe I'd start a WiP thread -- all the cool kids are doing it!

So here's something I'm working on for ConceptArt.org's latest weekly challenge: a redesigned and slightly older Alice who returns to find that Wonderland has gone all post-apocalyptic. I wanted to keep my design very recognizably Alice (mainly John Tenniel's Alice) by hitting some of the trademarks -- flouncy skirt, striped stockings, wavy blonde hair, and the blue-and-white color scheme. But instead of puffy capped sleeves, she's got shoulder guards; her skirt is kevlar panels with chainmail below; and she's wearing combat boots because -- well, they are sexy.

It's a rough sketch so far & needs a lot of refinement, but I thought I'd run it by the keen eyeballs of my fellow IFX regulars for feedback at this early stage. Any suggestions & critiques are welcome!

Ok, so this is obviously a very early and rough sketch! LOL!

Here's the general idea: I plan to play with some textures for the background. The bats and birds will be more suggested than actually detailed. There may or may not be moonlight in the background. I've not yet decided. The Mage himself will be a bit of a mystery, but he will need to convey something dark and evil. His cloak will eventually look a bit worn and tattered...he is quite ancient you know! ;) Also his face may end up not being a face, but I've put one there for now. There will be some kind of mist underneath his cloak....perhaps it is coming from, or is part of him. The main light source will emanate from the magic in his hands. And I already see, that the caplet portion of his cape will need to be a bit longer...

Alright, so Wip one, here it is. I've a lot of work to do. Off I go.

Hi guys.

If you visit CA you might have seen an earlier version of this there a while back, but since that forum is in the middle of painful complicated design surgery and it's impossible for me to post anything, would you guys mind giving a critique or two?

Does anyone here remember the Sega Genesis from way back when? There was an awesome and tough game on it called Phantasy Star 2. I liked one of its villains so much that I had to pay homage to the character in a more contemporary style - a kind of "what if this game was released today" kind of deal.

So here we go, artificial human Neifirst, getting her values on.

Still working on the background, but is overall readability okay? I had serious issues with that before. :/

151 Pokemon Challenge

151 Pokemon in 151 Days

It's been awhile since posting on here and a lot has been going on. Recently I have been doing a bit of freelance work for various companies, on top of some logo and design work for Virgin Media.

Most of the work I have been doing has been working with type which has meant my pencils have seen limited use. To fix this, I have decided to set myself a challenge. To sketch 151 of the original pokemon in roughly 151 days. I say roughly because there may be some days that I will be unable to do so, so i will make up for those days by sketching 2 the following etc. But I aim to have a new sketch posted everyday.

I have limited my time to around an hour a sketch. I want to stop being a neat freak and spending hours on one design. I need to speed up my process and improve my drawing, so I thought the best way is to draw something I love as much as I can, keep it quick, keep it loose and don't get bogged down with the details.

I may not like every sketch I do and I may spend a little more time colouring up my favorites in PS, but I just plan to enjoy it and stick to it! I will try and stop myself from rubbing out, starting again, repositioning, changing the style etc. and hopefully after 151 days will be able to see an improvement in my quick sketching from day 1. So here is Bulbasaur No.001.

My process will be a quick sketch with no-copy blue pencil and an outline in a normal, mechanical pencil.

I'm working on an iPad painting of a girl who has a chip and a small dragon on her shoulder. I'm kind of running into a wall with the pose and especially the arms and shoulders. There's definitely going to be redrawing but I'm having a difficult time killing my darlings and just getting down to it. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
