Painter vs Photoshop

Hey guys. Can any please give me a few cons and pros about these programs in regards to digital painting and ease of use. I can use photoshop fluently, but I have heard good things about painter, so I am thinking about have a play around with it... Cheers.

Is my battery low or what is it?

I see some guys are very found of neon light in their paintings. It is like an age of painting neon lights in the paintings, they are everywhere. I have tryed to paint them two but i didnt end upp with the same effect. I cant get that bright light right look on them. The light i paint look very flat and dead. Almost like a leak of blood instead of light source. Is there a secret that i'm missing or how do you guys do it? I have watched Ryan Churchs videos and he is using Painter to make that effect with the glow pencil, but why doesnt it look like it is glowing for me?

Do you guys have a totorial on that or something?

I had a copy of painter10 ages ago, but sold it as I copuldnt get used to it.

but I am really wanting somehting more painterly, so Im considering getting a copy. but I always had trouble with the layers system in painter, could never get it to work properly, so before I buy a copy can anyone point me in the direction of a good tutorial on the subject?

Vector files

I've tried to open simple vector files I've created in Deneba Canvas ver 8, Paint Shop Pro Pho X2 and n the free app Inkscape... When I open the vector file in Painter IX.5 it opens as a bitmap... I've also tried opening the Inkscape & Canvas files in Paint Shop Pro with the same results... I know Painter & PSP can create simple vectors but I would like to get into more complicated/advanced vector graphics...hence the desire to use Inkscape or Canvas...

Can Painter or Paint Shop Pro open any vector files and as a vector file without converting to a bitmap?

I've been following many of Bert Monroy's excellent tutorials where he creates a complicated vector designs in Illustrator and then opens it in Photoshop for further work on the image....

I do not have the budget to purchase Illustrator and/or Photoshop...

Stroke with Path in Painter?

Hello - I've been following some of Bert Monroy's on-line Photoshop tutorials at Revision3 http://www.revision3.com/pixelperfect and Bert often uses a Photoshop feature callled "Stroke path with brush" where-in a vector path can be stroked with a brush. This is a very valuable feature but it appears it can not be duplicated in Painter... Am I correct? Thanks kindly.... Ken

IFXers,

I've been messing about with new version of Corel's Painter this week. I've never really gotten into it before for two very simple reasons. Firstly, I've been using Photoshop for years - a case of better the devil you know. Secondly, I've always found the rendering issues a total pain in the butt.

And it was looking like the later was about to put me off Painter 11, till I stopped using the processor killing effects brushes and started to use some of the more standard brush sets. I say standard, that's being extremely unfair - the way in which brushes like Acrylics and Artists' Oils work is very impressive. And I was getting no lag issues whatsoever.

I found going straight into colour so easy - I've attached a quick speed-paint/doodle done whilst exploring 'bits' - I was so impressed with how Painter was making my decision process feel fluid and natural I now plan to kick-off more projects in Painter.

So... being as I'm a noob to Painter, anyone got any advice they'd like to share? Or if you're a Painter fan, what are you looking forward to in P11 that you'd like me to have a look at?

Bring it on people - the more I explore P11, the more I'll learn... one of those win win situations.

Corel Painter Sketchpad lag

Hi, having just recieved my intuos I was able to download Corel Painter Sketchpad as part of the bundle. It all works fine except I am experiencing quite a lot of lag using the brushes. I have turned off brush ghosting and it still lags. Is there any other way to reduce this. I really want to use this neat little package. If it helps I am runnng WinXp, 2.8 ghz processor, 1.5 gig of ram and a Radeon HD2600 pro graphics card. Thanks in adv...

Morning all. I've got a bit of a challenge - a character portrait of a chap who has silvery veins in his eyes.

Any ideas on how to do such a thing in Painter without it looking like a pile of pap?

CMYK in a tif. file

i've been having some trouble lately and i'm hoping someone here can help. when i save a tif. file and use the CMYK option, it overly separates the colors and pulls all the density from the darker colors creating a halo effect. my new editor is busting my chops, telling me it's not up to their specs and i need to adjust my CMYK settings. how do i solve this issue. i haven't changed how i do anything and other editors i've worked for have never complained about this before. i've attached an example, i did lighten it some to make it more visable. thanks for any help " />

Painter 11 Hot Fix

In case you weren't aware, there is a new patch for Painter 11 (I think Windows only at the moment). Run Check for Updates when in Painter but I think it downloads automatically anyway, so this post might be redundant! It fixed a terrible bug in my version.

Pattern Brushes

Hi, I have just installed Painter 11 demo from this months iFX dvd and I was playing with the pattern brushes. Could anyone please inform me on how I can create my own custom patterns to work with these brushes. Thanks guys.

I am also considering going for an intuos 3. But I am unsure as to whether to get the standard A5 or the wide A5. I have a LG Flatron w2242S. So any tips guys please thank you.

Optimal brush settings for comic book style inking?

Hi, I'm a Painter newbie and wondering if some of you might have a preferred set of brush settings for comic book style inking. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Oh, I probably should mention I'm currently running version 8. I'm hoping to upgrade eventually but I figure the basics will remain the same from one edition to the next.

Anyway - thanks in advance for any hints and tips offered.

Does Painter have anything equivalent to Art Rage's stencils? I do own Art Rage 2.5 but seldom use it as I much prefer Painter... But I was viewing an online tutorial for Art Rage's stencils and can see where they could be quite useful.... I'm using Painter IX.5...

So you paint in the big window and also have a little window open to view a small version.

I know there's a little "info" window, a bit like PS navigator....

Creating Texures? Metal & Cloth

I'm working on a illustration of a man holding a shield running in a heroic pose. I'm almost finished but trying out testures to add. For instance he's wearing an armor fir upper torso. Right now its brown. Any suggestions or links on finding a metal looking texture effect to apply to aromr. He's also wearing pants any way i can make pants have a cloth texture to it? Also, want to ass a metal looking texture to his silver shield? I appreciate whatever tips.

Question About Painter X

I don't know if this has been there the whole time or not...

Whenever I create a new canvas or open one I have made up. Beside "untitled" or the filename I have (OP).

What is this?

I thought it was a background layer thing, but when I select a new layer, I still see it (I don't see the layer name).

I'm on a PC

Looks quite good. It's a slimmed down Painter but not like Elements. No "photo painting", but rather the tools you would need for sketching and making roughs with everything visible rather than having to search in menus.

losing my texture effect..please help

Hi, can any of you kind and knowledgeable kind soul help!

I've been busting a gut trying to work out just where Ive gone wrong.

Just started a painting, used a rough textured background just because I fancied a mad experiment. wish i hadn't bothered. Got so far with my picture and now I find that when i apply new paint it over paints the background texture! Eliminates the textured bit with all the new brush marks i apply. Help i cant get it to behave, tried reading the help section but seem to be going round in circles.

I do have the layer set as add, but every layer i now make a mark on the brush stroke appears as solid and hides the textured part of the picture. I am not trying to go for impasto mark with my brushes just yet was gonna do that towards the end of the picture., just laying down colour and shapes and wish to show the texture through it for now

Painter tips!

Hi,

I know everyone does things differently and has their own way of painting etc.

I'm quite new to painter and doing various tutorials from books.

I was just wondering if anyone had any tips? Mainly just for standard painting, like portraits or landscapes etc, nothing fancy or stylised - Pretty much I'm only using the brush - Tinting - Basic Round.

I did Ryan's Gnomon tutorial and he uses scratchboard pen but I don't like it at all, seems it's his main weapon of choice...

One particular thing I'm interested in Blenders, which ones do you use? I've tried them all but always seem to end up using Grainy water... is there a better one?

Pen Pressure

I cant seem to get any brushes in painter to react to pressure on my tablet. If I set the opacity to pen pressure for example I just end up getting a brush that only gives me dabs and doesnt flow anymore.

Pen pressure works fine in photoshop.

Hello, this is my first post, and I am looking for a bit of advice.

I have Photoshop CS3, and I am wanting to get into digital painting. I have found Painter X reduced to £114 but I was wondering whether it was worth getting it, or do you think it would be worthwhile waiting to see if a new version is coming out. Also if I have Photoshop do I really need painter as well? A lot of people seem to use it in Imagine FX so I imagine the answer is yes?
