Firstly, I was disappointed that a few of my favourite fantasy artists were omitted from the list of Imaginefx's most inspirational fantasy artists: James Gurney, Bobby Chiu, Paul Bonner, etc. Also, I was shocked that artists Marta Dahlig and Linda Bergkvist were ranked higher on this list than fantasy art legends Brian Froud (who brought the magic to the worlds of the films the Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal through his extroardinary character designs and whose influence impacted the whole contemporary fairy/whimsical art in general) and Todd Lockwood, whose art graces the covers of several of our favourite fantasy books, and James Jean, who created the extraordinary covers for the Fables graphic novel series, and Yoshitaka Amano, who has one of the most original styles I've ever seen. Not to say that Marta and Linda are untalented; their skill with the computer is very well executed through their paintings; they know colour and composition; their women are pretty...but that's pretty much it. When I pick up any magazine or book labeled "fantasy and sci-fi art", I expect to see art more....well, imaginitive...something I've never seen before... If I wanted to see images of photo-realistic, flawless-skinned, busty, barbie-esque women, I would pick up any issue of Vogue or Elle at my local newsstand. I still believe Marta and Linda deserve a place in the top 50 of some list, (maybe the in the top 50 Pinup/Sexy CGI gals)...but for inspirational fantasy/sci-fi art? I'm pretty sure my post is going to spawn a flame war, and if Imaginefx wants to delete my post because I have an opinion of the art one of their major contributors, just remember that little intro to the article in issue 50 "...if you think we've got them all in the wrong order, or if your favourite artist isn't included, please do share your views on our forums".

Subscriber issue 51 out now

Issue 51 should be making its way to subscriber's doors as I type, and there’s plenty of cool content to feast on.

The cover art is from this month’s lead interview artist Dave Dorman, fitting perfectly with this issue’s character design theme.

Inside you’ll have more of the character concept work of Dave, plus the nuts and bolts of Steampunk, the secrets on reworking unfinished art, and a look at the possibilities of ArtRage 3, plus loads more (keep an eye out for full details on the new issue page.)

UK lovelies should be receiving their copies imminently - subscribers in ‘The World’ can expect their copies next week.

Would. We've attached his request below. If it sounds interesting and you think you fit the bill, drop him a line!

//from Paul

Hey!

I spend a lot of time coding for the iPhone, but I have a big problem: I
find it really hard to get artists. I'm happy to pay people however they
want: a flat fee up front is fine, a cut of royalties from Apple is fine, or
if all you want is a big credit in the game for your portfolios then that's
fine too.

What I'm looking for is pretty simple: a pixeler (ie, I want 2D bitmap
graphics rather than 3D or vector art) capable of working at relatively low
resolutions (the iPhone is 320x480). Right now I have a project in mind that
would need space-themed artwork, so if you're good with spaceships and
similar then drop me a line. I have a few other ideas that are currently in
the early stages of coding, and of course I'm also open to new ideas if you
have one.

If you're interested, please email me at paul.hudson@gmail.com. Let me know
what you'd like in terms of money and please attach some sort of sample
space-themed artwork so I can see how much you kick ass.

Paul

Forum Christmas challenge announced!

Hey kids, get yourself over to the Official ImagineFX Challenges thread to see the hot news about the website Christmas challenge!

Yippee!

Image of the day replacemant

Just a little suggestion I came to think about now. The cheapest option.

So how exactly is this any reward for your loyal re-subscribing customers?

How about giving us re-subscribers a proper reward for our loyalty?

He is not the only one with the good brush at his side!

Let me take a wild guess here IFX.........You are inviting Craig Mullins to talk to you about his life and work and the project in wich he is involved in, but there will be no tutorials for us. Something tells me that he will say something that he always repeats when people starting asking him about his art. He always says that people ask him about how he does it and his response will be as usual "go and learn to paint and stop bugging me with your How do you do it" or he will refer to the artist Sargent.

If he doesnt make a tutorial for us, of wich i think so many are craving to get or at least to see, then why bothering with the invitation? I think many have pased the phase of looking upp to that guy, because he just doesnt care. I was one of them. Now after getting some artistic help frome much more professional artists who help out, and from my own artistic development, i came to realise that his help is not so important after all.

This kind of reminded me of George Lopez (yes the comedian) who in one of his shows said that when he was just an growing artist, he ones wanted to shake hand of another big comedian and that one didnt wanted to shake his hand because he was not on the same level as him. Now when he became a star and hade his own standup he desided to deliver a messege to that acter and that was....( no i wont say it, try and find it on youtube or semwhere) I kind of feel the same now giving Craig Mullins my personal thanks but no thaks.

This is what i think you guys at the IFX have done and this is my personal point of view on this guy. He can take this badly if he want, but at the same time he knows that this one doesnt just come frome one person.

...................I think i just made my point.

Poster boaster

Hey,

Anyone put their free issue 50 poster up yet?

Which side did you choose?
