Re: MYFX Challenge #274 - Elric of Melnibone - WIPS

Kodabble: When you use the attach funtion (under Options) the image might automatically resize - that way it'd post small but be clickable and viewable at a larger size. It's not something extra you have to do...

Sugar: Yes, two wip's or more in this thread. The link to the finals thread is in the very first post in this thread. (The finals are posted in the Art Challenges section and the WIPs in the WIP/Sketches section of the forum). Deadline for weeklies is wednesday midnight (just before thursday, that is...) - and that's UK time. And I agree, your Elric doesn't look albino yet. More kinda ebony... Still, it's a nice composition. :)

I've never done one of these challenges before and I've been toying with the idea for a while. I also had no idea who Elric was until I Googled him, he sounds like an interesting character. I was drawn to trying this challenge because I need practice drawing men.

Here's my first WIP. Some thumbnail sketches with a bigger more advanced rough sketch, so far I'm happy with the way he's going although I still need to add a lot more detail and figure out the background...

I'm liking how different everyones entries are so far!

The closer the Northern Lights workshop gets the worse I seem to draw... Must be nerves. But I made an attempt at Elric anyway, starting with small thumbs and some studies of Benedict Cumberbatch (if they're making a movie he might have the looks for it) and E-type (a Swedish artist who also has a rather long face...). I then did a pencil drawing, not using any refs - WIP 1

(Still practicing pencils before the workshop, though I'm not overly pleased with the result - his head ended up to small for one thing)

And then I more or less did a paintover of the sketch, allowing it to still show through (to varying degrees - the more I had to fix the less shows through, obviously). Enlarged his head and one eye (which might still be too small anyway).

WIP 2, Values (so far I'm fairly pleased but it's past bedtime and I might feel completely differently about it tomorrow, when my eyes and brain are rested!)

EDIT: Ooooh now I remember what it was I had left to do before upload... lol (there was to be runes on the blade, oops)

    Nice work Voluspa!

I've been messing with this on and off all evening. I've done more work on my line art; tidied it and added in more details. I've also started adding in some flat colours and couldn't resist colouring the eyes in properly. I've had a small play with skin tones, mainly because I want to get that pale skin tone spot on. I think I'm going to leave it for tonight and have another look tomorrow.

Re: MYFX Challenge #274 - Elric of Melnibone - WIPS

    Feeback time:

Mangle: It's a dramatic setup with that beam of light and it might work well for a poster, but I'd still be a bit cautious with all that negative space (unless you intend to fill it with something!)

Kodabble: Dramatic and action packed! Looking forward to colours.

Disco Matt: Good work as always. If I was to crit anything it's that so far his skin appears tanned rather than bone white (value wise) and that it's hard to tell if the white at the bottom is light or a carpet - but I'm guess that'll be clearer as you progress!

Sugar: I gave you some feedback in your own thread, nothing to add at this time :) I like it though.

Vespertine: The manga style is a little different from everyone elses but it's looking nice. I think you could perhaps pay a little more attention to the anatomy of his chest and waist under the clothes. It's always hard with clothes - they tend to obscure all your anatomy work (yay for nudes lol) but I think there's something a little off with the placement of the breast muscles and maybe the hips? Not entirely sure :)

Re: MYFX Challenge #274 - Elric of Melnibone - WIPS

    Good works everyone.

Vespertine - I like your manga twist on things. but have to agree with Voluspa the chest anatomy is bit off.

Koddable - very dynamic scketch good job

Disco Matt - loved the thumbs., and the last picture is coming along nicely.

Sugar - Interesting composition and colors

Mangle - Some dramatic lighting and posture cant wait to see the rest.

Voluspa - awesome start.  I love everything about it so far. If anything its more of a classical portrait and not a poster for the movie. Which is great and not a flaw at all. The hand holding a sword looks super dimensional. great value work

I'm not sure ill be able to finish on time. I want to leave some time to monthly challenge and some of my own stuff that's needs to be finished . But lust couple of weekly challenged are on par with monthly ones really good themes. I thought Ill sketch something quickly yesterday but ended up putting few hours into it. Here is my first wip. Still very loose. Crits are welcome

my basic first pass. The Teaser aspect has me in the mind to hint the elements so, basically a closeup of Stormbringer, with Elrics face being reflected on the blade. Probably darken the whole thing and keep text to the minimum, name and "coming soon" or something...

Ghost and Doc you're both off to very good starts. Love the face in the blade, Doc. Ghost, the composition looks nice, colours too (can't go wrong with blue and orange...) my only quib (? not sure that's the right expression) at the moment is that the sword's irregular form makes it look like you're seeing it through wavy water (distorted, that is). Though perhaps that's intentional and it'll all be obvious with the next wip ;)

EDIT - My wip 3 - I've repainted the hair (not sure it became more hairlike, though) and added colour. Probably more or less finished but I'm sure I'll find something to tinker with before Wednesday.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah I had planned to have the movie title bottom right, but there is still a lot of negative space. I've increased the figure a little in size. May even increase him further still.

Just a small update. I was initially going to have a few slain foes, and Stormbringer taking their souls, but we'll see if I have time to include them...

Kodabble: Nice amount of action going on there, but the arm position of the dude getting stabbed looks a little off to me.

Disco Matt: Loving the dramatic pose going on there - very brooding. The skewed stairs seem a little at odds to the positioning of your figure, but maybe that's just me. Can't wait to see more :)

sugar: Looking good so far. I agree with you on the skin tone, though - he's not looking albino yet. It'll be cool to see once you've sorted his tones out.

Vespertine: Liking his look so far, but I think where his right arm and chest meet is a bit off. The arm seems to taper too much, making it appear quite thin in comparison to his deltoid.

Voluspa: Looking good there, Voluspa. Great value work. I like how you've given him a strange, other-worldly look.

GhostImage: You've got a cool, old-school movie poster/book cover vibe to this one. Liking the sword design too - very Dark Elven. Good stuffs.

DoctorDark: Cool idea, looking forward to see how it develops.

Interesting composition Matt - I have to admit though, my entire spine is tingling with the feeling that I'll fall off my chair when I see him sitting with his feet dangling in empty air like that. *shivers*

WIP2. As i said, darkening the whole image. Also, my only knowledge of Elric is from playing the Roleplaying game, so did some research on Stormbringer etc, so no Black hilt, blade and incorporating the runes on blade. Background will be pretty bare, possibly a texture or something, ill leave Text to the End.

Re: MYFX Challenge #274 - Elric of Melnibone - WIPS

It is definately cool seeing how different everyone's take is on the challenge!

Disco: Really like the style of your WIP,s and your second fleshed out one is sharp, looks like a graphic novel cover! I agree might need to redesign the background some to deal with that floating foot.

Verspertine: Nice and polished, look forward to some value (lights and darks), to make it pop.

Ghost: Little early in the process, but like how your concept is looking at the whole finished "teaser" poster look, wanna see where you go with it!

Kodabble: Hope your figuiring out how to do the posting on the site look forward to seeing this past the sketch! nice dynamics tho!

Doctor: Awesome idea, atm it looks like a sword that's straight down and has a flared edge as opposed to a blade coming at you, but I am sure as you go farther you will develop the perspective, it could get hard with the face reflection!

Mangle I agree think you could go quite a bit bigger on the figure, and still keep the nice drama you have now. and I hope there is a seat coming soon or is he leaning in mid action pose?

Voluspa: Really impressive love the look, definitely has that weird albino look (no offense to anyone who may be an albino 8/ ) in a good way tho, I would like to see you push your values some to give it some more dimension, little flat atm, but looks excellent, the hand is really nice!

Thanks for all your help, look forward to all the finals!

Dr,  I'm really digging this.  I can see it as a teaser poster.  A poster that comes out early to peak interest, but keeps people guessing a little.  I can see what Sugar said regarding the perspective illusion.  It works regardless, and flips from one to another (currently) if you think about it and look at it.  Although I initially saw the blade coming towards me :)
