Re: MYFX Challenge #274 - Elric of Melnibone - WIPS

Feedback for the "newcomers" (who hadn't posted before my last feedback round):

GhostImage - In your last wip Elric looks a little ghostlike rather than albino maybe. But the sword definately reads clearer now.

Doc - I really like the claw shaped hilt of your sword, including the assymetry of it. I feel it enhances the demonic aspect of the blade - it not just being a sword but a creature (tried the same, but no claws on mine...)

grumbleputty - You've captured a dramatic moment which the linework emphasizes but I do feel that the intense green in your latest wip is rather distracting.

sHuff - I hope we'll see more wips from you! I like the pose and that you've included the storm in stormbringer, so to speak :)

RosanneHayes - I really like the "eye through the sword" but if I may, I'd suggest a bit fewer of those wisps of hair flying about. To me it kind of gives the impression of an old man with thin hair - although I guess that may be the light colour helping there... (or not helping, as it were)

Hendryx - Including the souls and the sorcery :) Looking forward to seeing where you'll take this.

Sonofwolfhound - working fast as always, it seems :) And your final looks like one grumpy not-quite human albino!

to Kodabble  - I think the head of Elric is too big comparing to his arms and according to perspective

    Disco Matt:

If I'm honest I didn't actually know who Elric of Melnibone was Embarrassed, so I googled him and was like 'what is this epicness on my monitor!'

Epicness indeed, that's exactly how I felt. Love your WIPs, too.

I started doodling a couple of days ago in my smoko breaks, but haven't had a chance to scan them until now. So here's WIP 1:

Gettin close to finishing. :O Composed the graphics, and added a background.

I tried to reduce the wispiness a little, removed some strands and made other thicker. Still struggling with the hair over all.

@ RosanneHayes: That looks awesome... I love it!

Unfortunately I used up most of my time budget on the sketch, so I don't think I'll get it finished. Here's WIP 2 anyway:

Rosanne - have to say I'm loving where you're going with this. The teeth and the placement of the sword hilt and text looks great. The hair is better :) One tiny detail that I wish was different is the eyebrow that's seen through the sword. I'm reading it as the face in the sword having a somewhat different expression, but I think I'd prefer it if the eyebrows matched up a little more, like the rest of the eye.

12.45am and most of the painting is done. Just gotta do a few touch ups and add the text... after I've had some sleep.

    Here's WIP 4:

Great to see all this attention on Elric... he's so fun and graphic to draw, I think. I didn't even know this challenge was going on, but I love the work in the thread so far... especially Voluspa's - you've really caught something nice there.

I have way to much going on this week to enter, but I thought I'd post an un-related Elric study I happened to do last week, for testing out Justin Gerard's amazing Watercolour Blossom brushes for CS5:
