I don’t think my last image explained the story so I set up a new view

which shows more detail of the sky harbour and explained more

about the land refugees stuck on a dilapidated tramp steamer In the foreground.

I did a little more work on the foreground.. Can’t make up my mind about clouds..

Happy or sad? Upbeat or gloomy?

I love yours Zinc. I may be just suffering from a slight case of sentimentality but I think the balloons are brilliant and this is one of the happiest and cheeriest paintings I've seen in a while! Ace!

It's got a bonkers, Gorillaz feel to it too. Awesome!

I thought this ( http://community.imaginefx.com/forums/permalink/381714/380853/ShowThread.aspx#380853 ) looked awesome as it was Vinnie. In my opinion this WIP was very strong and - to be honest - quite a lot better than these new WIP's.

I don't know what you are going for now, but the dusky colour scheme and the solitary nature of the blimps was really working for me. If your heart is set on your newer WIP's then please take the same lighting and colour pallete into acount. It looked great!

Thanks Domtopia. I was going for a light hearted feel, so I'm glad I managed to put a smile on somebodies face Smile

Vinnie, I agree with Domtopia in that I thought the solitary blimp had more impact. It reminded me of something out of 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow'. That said I'm looking forward to seeing where you take this.

Finally got back to work on this after several days of dealing with my real job and various other pressing matters. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I may have made my typical mistake and bitten off more than I can chew in the time allotted. I'm having a lot of fun with the details, but I don't know if I can complete the entire piece at this level within the next ten days. I guess we'll see.

    Dontopia & Zinc

Although I hate to have to start again. I think you are absolutely right. There was something wrong with the layout.. So much detail in the foreground took away from  the sky harbour, I felt I needed to explain more about the environment but I can't get detail in foreground to work. I think something simple like a flight of seagulls perhaps.

Anywho!!  went back to the first Wip as you suggested. Thanks for the head-up I really appreciate it

Totally redesigned the dirigible to give it a more retro-futuristic, sleek passenger liner sort of look. The glowing discs are supposed to hint at some type of technology that increases the buoyancy of the gas chambers and multiply its lifting capacity. This is less important to the big dirigible than it will be to a few smaller vessels I plan to have moored to the docking rings and floating about. I'm trying to avoid having what would normally be huge balloons cluttering up and obscuring half the scene.

The cityscape and sky are photographs that have been heavily filtered and painted over. I have a lot more work to do on both, assuming I have time. The cityscape needs some more buildings above the horizon, I think, and needs to be pushed further into the background, while the sky just needs some cloud adjustments here and there.

I'm concerned that the dirigible may be crowding the statue on top of the tower a bit. I had wanted to have it already docked, but I may rewind a few minutes in time when it was still on approach and push it a little further to the upper left.

Re: April 2012 MYFX monthly Challenge - The Sky Harbour - WIPS

Mine is finally inked.  I know my process is pretty different than others here.  (Much more along the typical comics process).  But I think this one should start showing what the end product will be coming out like.

Hope you guys like... on to coloring/shading.

Vektor - I am loving the look you have going.  Seems to me that you could pull the dirigible back a bit and dock it by the nose?  Might give you a little more space for the statue to breath.

Ok,  some comments and then my craptastic effort:

Vektor - this reminds me of a video game concept art....and it looks great so far :) just keep an eye on your perspective in the bottom right :)

nigelgoh - looking forward to seeing the final one!

Vinnnie - very 3d model so far, im liking the overall composition and look forward to more but I think the single ship wip was stronger...actually i really loved the 'raw'ness of the drawings you made initially...would it be wrong if i said i liked those?

Zinc - this is full of whimsy and fun...my favourite so far :)

Midscrawl - this looks great...is it done? i find the white cloud and the building are fighting for my attention...was this intentional to keep us on the background?

Ok that was just very fast so Im sorry if I missed you.

I found this a big challenge and struggled to get into it so Im just having fun with this one...

And now for the moment no one has been waiting for:
