Yup, I agree with kazky. And I rather like the big ballon-bug thing that holds it all up... But I guess the sky colour (and ligthing) could be changed in the latter to make us like it just as much Stick out tongue

Midscrawl, i like the sky in the first one but the idea on the second, its very "Laputa: castle in the sky"

This will be my first ever post on the board as well. Been reading the print magazine for a year or so and lurking around the forums for a month or two. I really liked the challenge topic so I've decided to go for it.

Great starts everyone! Vektor I really like yours so far, really good perspective.

I'm with Chantika on this one, I wanna participate but I'm not sure that I'll do very well... I actually need to design a sky harbour for one of my projects, so maybe I'll join in to get some input and help.

Can't wait to see everyone's awesome stuff :)

Re: April 2012 MYFX monthly Challenge - The Sky Harbour - WIPS

Thanks for the comments guys, I think I've come down in favour of doing the second pic, mainly because it requires me to paint recognisable stuff and so I'l probably learn more while doing it. Already working on improving the sky to be more in line with the first pic.

Komugurackingdom (can I call you Kom?) nice start, looking forward to seeing where this is going.

Chantika, don't give up, the object (as I see it) is not to win the challenge but to improve your work in the company of like minded people, If you think your work is bad then it should be easier to improve so you gain more.

Vektor, strong start:) only crit so far is that maybe the 'weight' of the composition is a little balanced. also the sun could be moved to the right a bit. (too central).

Gnuchi, It's a project as well? what are you faffing about at then? get in here:)

For all of you that want to participate but are unsure if you should, do it. You will receive help, push yourselves and hopefully improve and learn new things. I know I did and I appreciate everything that this group taught me. So its put up or shut up time here's the start of mine.

Re: April 2012 MYFX monthly Challenge - The Sky Harbour - WIPS

Okay guys you've twisted my arm enough so I'll join in :P If only to get some help with an area I'm not comfortable in!

Here's a quick sketch I did... I did a couple others but this one turned out the best. I want to depict a tall, circular building that's got these dock sort of things coming out for the airships to load/unload their merchandise. I'm really really bad at perspective, it was always my weakest thing in school :( Ideally I'd like to depict the whole building rather than just a single dock, but I'm getting too caught up in the miniscule details and worrying about how it should function, which maybe shouldn't matter?

    ANY advice would be welcome!

Naszia I really like the colors in yours and the atmosphere in general. :)

Radish I love the little village on that island. Can't wait to see the progress!

Re: April 2012 MYFX monthly Challenge - The Sky Harbour - WIPS

Awesome posts everyone! I agree, if you're not sure of yourself, still post. I'm doing that myself, since it's a great way to become better.

@Vektor: I agree with Midscrawl, the sun slightly to the right would improve the balance. Other than that, great start!

@Miscrawl: You can call me Kom. I'll try not to think in Dutch on that (Kom means 'come' in Dutch) ;) But thanks! I'll post new progress soon.

@Naszia: Awesome colours! And clouds. I'm gonna learn from your clouds, definitely.

@radish57: I really like the concept and your sketchwork. The clouds remind me of Ghibli, which is really good. I have trouble sensing the scale of your piece though. Maybe add something like a ship or ground to make things measure up?

@gnuchi: You just painted my first vision of a sky harbour. It makes me think of steampunk.or of Final Fantasy 9 with its airships. Definitely keep this one up!
