can someone give me some pointers on coloring b&w? I usually paint directly in color, but this time wanted to do B&W first..trying to put down some color but it's looking really weird. (using a color layer)

My initial thoughts were little girl and beast with huge teeth. Here's my first rough concept.

Not sure if the horizon line is right (window sill level) if going for this view through the keyhole - any thoughts?

 

 

Well, I wasn't going to fool with this challenge myself, since I have quite a bit going on this month. But couldn't get the darn theme out of my head! :) ... so I just sketched up something in Artrage. Not sure if I will have much time to fool with it, but wanted to at least sketch something out.

I couldn't get the idea out of my head either, Dave! An insidious topic, Adventuregoat...

Some really good stuff already, and it's only March 2! 

Dave: The anatomy looks a bit rubbery on the beast's hands & feet, but I like the idea so far.

Mercurycat: That's great. I love the view/concept and really like your creature, and well the whole thing. Can't wait to see how it comes out!

Rageful: Love the action & the beast. I wonder about cutting off the feet, though.

Gabriella: Totally awesome. It's really well composed and a complete thought, and executed beautifully so far.

13598: It's a great idea for a picture.  Keep going!

carl666s: I'm not sure what's happening here yet. Show us some more!

Bergy: I really like your style, and that's a great variety of monsters. The one you chose to render is particularly nasty looking and hard to sympathize with, which is a great twist.

I ended up with a sort of kinky, xenophilia concept -- maybe a little too friendly .... Pic is a little murky now, but I've only just started laying in lights.

A little update here..

To Rageful, painting in B&W is just to distinguish values. I personally find it harder..double work. In the end you'll still have to figure out the colors and paint it all over again.

Thanks Smolin..yours is looking great! The beast seems a little too friendly though but on the whole I like it can't wait to see how it turns out in the end ;)

Nice color choice..I really like the feel of the de-saturated colors you picked, Gabriella. 

Haven't done a monthly chalange in a bit so this should be fun... like the theme too.

I'm going for man's best friend.... a 50ft Dog, auhh memory's :)

13598: love the idea and if you can pull off the lighting it'll be great.

Smolin: yours is ...em....well...ahh... i think there laws about that kinda thing :) should be good

Gabriella: looking good, the contrast between big and scary and girly is great, love the 50's look of the girl too. I'd loose the rope though, makes him look more like a slave than a friend

Dave: your monster has that "what the hell" kinda look on his face, i like it.

Mercurycat: the key hole really helps focus on the composition... wonder what his dentist bill's are like :)

Rageful: looking really good, not sur if leaving the background to the end is such a good idea though (speaking from a few bad experences)

Thanks Smolin, yeah was just a quick sketch and I wanted to over-exaggerate the hands and feet. But will hopefully take out the rubbery feel as I work them up. :) Also liking you girl sitting on her scary friend. Very nice pose! :)

Thanks, Jonny. Actually what I was going for, thinking he was a little thrown back/surprised by the gesture. As well as being a little off balance. Looking forward to seeing your big dog come to life. He's definitely got the size! :)

 

Well, with the wife not feeling well today, decided to not work in the house, so spent a little time throwing in some color and deciding on a BG. Thinking a hut of sorts for his home.

I'm not a professional by any means. So don't take my point of view as a ultimate.

I think you have a great start. I like the story you are trying to sell. I dont think that the composition is all that bad. But here is what i would do. I just used the lasso tool to move the elements around and pushed some more values.

 I like what you did with the background. And a creature design is also cool. Im not so sure on the size of the secondary person the one with the dog, right now it looks like a child compering to a girl. It seems like he needs to be bigger. IDK. Great job so far. :)
