Re: MYFX Challenge #270 - Rocketgirl Rita - FINAL

There were a lot of great entries this week, but for me, the three that combined an observation of the time period, good composition & storytelling, and above all, sexiness were:

    1) Sonofwolfhound3 - Excellent piece! It's fully realized, well composed, and feels like an authentic piece from the period. Great work.

    2) Thulsadoom - While there is a problem with her anatomy (really short legs) and the background moon looks a bit out of place, I still think this looks great. You got a perfect period style to her that's very believable.

    3) Hendryx - It looks a bit unfinished and the values on her asteroid are off, but it's got great character and style.

Two others I really liked were em.. and Guang, but I think you both missed the period: em..'s felt more 30's and Guang's felt like a Jules Verne pinup - both great, but a bit off the mark for the challenge.

Re: MYFX Challenge #270 - Rocketgirl Rita - FINAL

    1 - Em...

    2 - Guang

    3 - Smoli

Em wins it for me because of the 'oops' factor which gives her pose a purpose.

Re: MYFX Challenge #270 - Rocketgirl Rita - FINAL

I probably have a rather limited grasp on what makes up a 50's pinup style, but I'm basically thinking Elvgren - the sweet innocent girls that go "oops" and 50's style fashion, so it influences my feedback, but here goes:

    1) Thulsadoom - I still think her physique is a little blocky for a pinup girl, but the final rendering of the image and in particular her skin is so excellent and together with her pose and expression, she gets my first place.

    2) Smolin - coming a very close second because I love it. It's got the oops, even if it's perhaps not very sci fi (more military, in my eyes). It looks great. That matters too!

    3) em... - Really captures the fun, the opps, the Elvgren style, but she also reminds me of Amelia Earhart in that outfit, so smolin (I think it was) may be right about the 30's vibe.

Very close on em...s heels follow SonofWolfHound - You really captured that old time star quality but it feels a bit too unfinished to make the top three. I also think that the placement of her left leg makes her pose a little awkward. I think it might have worked better if we saw the whole leg in front of what she's sitting on.

    Others, in no particular order;

Guang: I like the finish on her suit and helmet - you managed nicely with the transparency, but I think the pose feels awkward (even though similar to em...'s) and I'm not really getting "my expected 50's pinup feeling" (for lack of a better expression)

Hendryx: Fun idea, well done - she's got a great face, but I think it's a little more comicky than I'd expect for the challenge (I guess that had comics in the 50's too, though... hmm...)

Maria: I like the outfit she's in, though maybe there are a bit too many flash patterns around her torso/shoulders/upper arms. Nice touch on the legs and boots, though. Love the bubble gun :)

sHuff: Sweet pose and I think it works well with the 50's and the sci-fi theme. The shading, especially on her torso and arms, could have used a bit more work, particularly along the edges. Also, I think she deserves to make up a somewhat larger part of the image ;)

DoctorDark: She's got an interesting face and a cool outfit, but all the colours are kind of taking away from HER, so to speak, making her less pinuppy. (Again, also more comicky than I guess I expected for the challenge)

aocdb: It's a sweet girl, with a great hairdo, but I'm not seeing anything sci-fi about her except the background. She looks like a ballerina, and I also think it looks odd to have her sitting like that with so much negative space underneath.

Kodabble: It's a nice idea with potential, but I'm not getting that "fun" vibe that old pinup images often had and so it doesn't really capture that 50's feeling.Perhaps with a different facial expression, you'd come closer to that.

And to everyone who gave their girls a fishbowl helmet, I have to ask: How did they get their heads in there!? Stick out tongue j/k

I'm sorry I didn't manage to finish my own in time, but I'm glad to see so many entries this week and of such great quailty - I had a really hard time deciding, between my top four in particular.

Has anyone else noticed how themes involving girls always bring everyone out of their closet ;)

Anyway, great round... so many wonderful entries. Here are my top 3:

    1. Sonofwolfhound3

    2. Smolin

    3. em...

    And a very close 4. mariasahlberg.com

Re: MYFX Challenge #270 - Rocketgirl Rita - FINAL

So many great entries (which hopefully means there will be more pinup challenges in the future). Really difficult whittling it down to three.

1st: Smolin - A fresh spin on a classic pose, beautifully colour balanced and designed. My favourite touch is the echoing of the rocket trail and her hair trail.

2nd: Thulsadoom - Her whole demeanour says "50s pinup". Simple as that. I think the moon background would be better if it were just a simple graphic white circle, but that's my only gripe.

3rd: Sonofwolfhound3 - If any entry looks like a "Rita", this does, as she very much reminds me of Rita Hayworth. With a little more finish, this might have made my top spot, as the idea and feel are pitch perfect.

And the rest, in order of their appearance in the thread:

mariasahlberg.com - Whole lot of fun, with the bubble gun and the alien ball, and my favourite colour scheme of the challenge.

sHuff - There something very sweet and serene about your girl, and the rocketpack design is very cool, but I think it could have done with a tighter crop so that she was larger in the image.

DoctorDark - Her striking white hair and knowing smile give her a strong "in charge" vibe, and the vivid costume design put me in mind of Mike Kaluta's retro sci-fi comic "Starstruck" (which is a good thing)

aocdb - I like the idea of the graphic element, but the actual positioning has created some uncomfortable tangents. I'm interested in knowing if you were inspired by the work of great George Petty - ballet shoes were a common feature in his pinups (even when the subject had nothing to do with ballet), so seeing them here made me smile.

Kodabble - The only reason this isn't in my top three is because it's not full figure (as pinups were) It might not be the most polished entry, but it's by far my favourite concept, and your suggested tagline is great.

Guang - A fun collection of sci-fi staples, and I like the circular motif throughout. It's maybe a bit too cluttered composition-wise, but It's a quality piece of work.

Hendryx - Excellent hitchhiker concept, and a very nice, clean "Wally Wood" kind of style. Although I like the idea of the flame logo boots, overlapping as they are, they are quite hard to read at first glance.
