Re: March 2012, MYFX Monthly Challenge - Tarra's Scary Friend Beast - WIPS

Hey thanks for the comments everybody.

I'll try and post some comments later if I have time. But first I wanna get my BG done for this painting at least. i won't have a lot of time to work on this in the coming days.

But tons of great pieces popping up here. Keep it up everybody.

I should have a new update before work today.

    Best

    Mike

Update...added in the BG...going with a top secret kind of facility "Section 6"

Edit: OK after looking at this a bit more...Not sure if I'm ready to start coloring this yet. Needs more details on the walls I think.

Coming along nicely, Forrest. Really like her face expression. As far as crits, I would say you might want to check out her left leg. It doesn't look right, namely at the knee bend. (unless you have her wearing boots, but if so, it's not reading well at this time) Also, the crotch area could be defined more. Right now there isn't a break in the folds that defines both legs, the folds in the pants seem to cross right over the middle and not disappear in between showing where each leg is. ... The last thing is minor and might seem trivial, but the pocket where her right hand is appears too small, and I would think her hand would push it out a little more then you have it now. Or just enlarge the pocket some.

Edit: forgot to add a quick update on mine. Didn't do a whole lot, but did put some time in on it tonight. Mostly still working on the characters.

Going for something new. More angel and demon than vikings.

    Here are some comments :)

@ Bergy68: wooooeh I really like the action!!!

@ Forrest: Very cool creatuer concept, as for the canvas, I would show tarra's feet.

Right now it feels like she has a lot of useless space above her and her feet are being cut off for no reason.

@ Digital Dave: The troll like beats is really cute. Perhaps cropping the canvas a little would help the viewer focuss ont hem.

The space on the left is distarcting at the moment, plus a square cnavas can be really boring even if the subject is not.

@ Chantika: Very cool reminds me of Saturnus eating it's children :P a very classical painting.

@ Gnuchi: Nice one, I like the girls outfit. Perhaps some more visible muscles on the bull?

@ Zinc: Classic! The sexy girl and her tentacel friend :P

@ Johnnymarvel: Great work on the skin coloring! Looking forward to seeing the completed piece.

@ Domtopia: Really cool I see a lot of characters, kinda reminds me of the BFG :) The piece is a bit dark for me though.

@ Grumbleputty: The girl veriosn of voldemort and her alien like basilisk :P I really like the girls expression :)

@ Rorke: Cool background, any work on the characters yet?

@ Disco Matt: soo cute! Love this style! Looking forwar to see the progress.

@ Wrekluse: Wow that beast is massive! Really cool.

@ Catzombie: Really nice composition. But the characters are a bit similair to the ones you made for the farseer contest, which were also a dragon with a girl. Any reason for that?

@ JoyJee: Really cool, love the robot theme!!

@ Aocdb: Zombie chick for th win! She looks sexy!

    Basic sketch:

I'm going for the bullied girl who befriended a beast. She's not going to have any problems with that anymore.

I'm seeing some really nice entries here. Particularly like Wrekluse's entry :)

A little bit more than a line sketch now. Creating a gloomy but spooky atmosphere.

@ Lady medusa: Such a cool topic! Revenge is hers!

Re: March 2012, MYFX Monthly Challenge - Tarra's Scary Friend Beast - WIPS

Ok some for some feedback as promised...didnt have time yesterday, Ive gone with two different light sources on mine which is proving quite a challenge. Ive infused a bit of magic effect using the technique Jim describes in art q&a from issue 81. Had a lot of fun with that actually hehe

Im happy with how its going but I need to punch up the colour of Tarra's dress so no wip from me atm til I get more done. Instead some feedback...

Wreckluse - this is looking epic..hows it going?

gnuchi - I like the idea here, looks like there are a few light sources going on, one behind the beast, one right in front of the beast and the girls head. Is there going to be a lantern or something for front and moonlight for behind? just some thoughts :) or are you approaching from a different way? I always find I struggle with light sources generally so looking forward to seeing how you tackle this

grumbleputty - love the textures on the beast, looking forward to you developping tarra a little further, she has an awesome expression though :)

forrest_i@yahoo.com - remind me of girl with dragon tattoo except the dragon has somehow jumped off her back and come to life. I like the grungy city feel to this, hope to see you play this up :)

catzombie - love the interaction between the girl and the beast, I agree with comments so far about her anatomy but Im looking forward to seeing this one finished.

Domtopia - cant wait to see more here, i thought this was a brilliant concept from the moment i first saw it :)

jonnymarvel - love the rendering of Tarra, my only observation at this stage is that her skin feels cold compared to the warmth of the beach?

Zinc - this feels like a tattoo in the making...will you be sporting some ink soon? ;)

Bergy68 - cant wait for your next post, always something to look forward to when you start laying in the colour and painting..... looking forward to the direction this goes :)

Digital Dave - her shirt pops right off the painting, love it. feels like there should be a little more shadow where the beasts hand is on her hip, is it actually on her already or moving there? I think this is looking great so far though

helmighs - very religious feel to this one, I like the beast (demon?). im looking forward to seeing this one rendered up a little more :)

LadyMedusa - welcome! like what you have so far, hard to make a comment until its a little further along but looking forward to what you do :)

Re: March 2012, MYFX Monthly Challenge - Tarra's Scary Friend Beast - WIPS

Hi all. Wonderful pictures so far. :) I've been reading ImagineFX for a few years now and I've finally decided it was time to join the forums and make some art, and what better way to start off than with an art challenge? I love drawing strange creatures, so I thought this challenge was a good place to start.

Sorry for the terrible scan. It's been a very long time since I've scanned a sketch onto my computer. I hope you can make it out okay. I'm thinking of extending the picture to the left and adding a terrified teacher.

Re: March 2012, MYFX Monthly Challenge - Tarra's Scary Friend Beast - WIPS

Right. It's time to get down to business!

I have been far too neglegant on these threads as of late, so here goes!

Bergy: I am loving the comic book dynamism. It will be interesting to see how this pans out and what colour pallet and what painting method you will choose. I always enjoy your paintings sir, so this should be a belter! Great concept!

Forest: Your WIP is giving me attitude! How rude!!!... ha! This is a good piece with some brilliant textures and plenty of interesting narrative. In my opinion I think the smoke-to-monster effect will be best served with the smoke looking as smooth and smoke-like as possible. I know you have more up your sleave, but at the moment it looks more like wool than smoke. Get this right and it'll look awesome!

Digital Dave: I like this concept and the slightly sad feel to it that you have captured. You have a unique style Dave that I really like. I still feel it's a bit bright though. It may just be me, but I think that the piece would benefit form a darker pallet of mid-tones and shadows. You're the judge, my friend, but that's what I think.

Catzombie: Once again this is going to be ace! Your line art was great and Tarra's face is beautiful, so if anything I would say that the composition is fine as it is and the fact that Tarra is obscured and sort of wrapped up by her beast is a very strong point. The painting has an emblematic feeling to it that I love and not being able to see any more of Tarra than you have already drawn is perfect. But, keep going with what feels right for you and I will look forward to seeing where you take this.

Helmighs: Glad to see you again on this challenge. This is a genuinely creapy concept that you have come up with, but I must confess I preferred the first version of the 'Friend Beast' because it looked much more sinister. Your second one is good too but, for me, looks a bit too agressive and therefor the feeling of creapiness is replaced with a sense of threat. So, it depends on what you want to achieve. Also, lovely rendering on Tarra's face so far!

Lady Madusa: Hey there. I like this, it's gentle and therefor a bit different to the rest. It looks bright and clear too, so I look forward to seeing what rendering methods you use. Cool beast!

Rrushadow: Welcome to the forum! The scan came through fine, but it's a bit early to be giving feedback. So I will just say: make sure you have a solid idea before you start. Your style looks somewhat nieve too, which is fine if it is styalised. Listen to the advice that is given to you and don't take critisism too personally and you will learn loads form this crowd! Enjoy!!

Gnuchi: Hey! This is looking great. Lovely rendering and a great concept. I like the cape running along the bottom, but once again I can't help thinking that the composition would be helped if you were to complete the shape. Your piece has created two sides of a trangle, down and left from Tarra (our right), the along the bottom where the cape curls a little at the bottom (our) left. Then there is a void from there to the bull's head. For me, it would look more complete to have an object or an effect that linked all three sides of the triangle. See what you think. I love your style, so I look forward to seeing where this goes!

Disco Matt: There's that monkey again!! Ace! This is a great sketch and I want to see where you go with this. Please keep going with this, it looks fantastic!

Zinc: I like the simplicity of this. It's still a WIP and so I will await the rendering. I look forward to seeing what you end up with because your attention to conceptual detail is ace.

Jonny Marvel: An interesting concept. And I have seen what you are capable of in IFX magazine so this is going to be great. At the moment, it's too much of a sketch to critique, hence I will not!

Grumbleputty: In your frist sketch your Tarra was by far the scarriest Tarra of all the concepts so far. That should be the key feature in this painting for me. What a great idea! As it stands, the beast looks good and the environment is fine. Work on Tarra though and make her stand out and this piece will be a winner!

Anyway... That just leaves me to comment on my own guff! This is the latest update of my work. I have started to draw in what's under the glass, but I don't like it so for now I will just show what work I have done on the main ogres! I am experimenting with a different style here and trying to achieve a more 'painty' feel. I am stuck on the texture for the ogre's skin, but it's still early days yet. I just want to get the bulk of the painting done and then I can worry about the different textures later. And to answer the various contributors who asked if I am going to lighten it, the answer is YES, but probably when I'm finished!! Hope you see some promise in it guys and girls!
