MYFX Weekly Challenge #236 - Grumpy Troll - WIPs

    Grumpy Troll

Welcome to challenge number 236. Don't forget to cast your vote in the previous challenge while you still can. This weeks challenge is taken from the selections thread, feel free to offer suggestions for future challenges themes (see link below).

    Brief:

Without context, design the character. The only restrictions are that he must have something on or beside him to show scale.

    Description:

A new (fictional) fantasy film for kids, has a grumpy, somewhat dimwitted troll-like character who in contrast to his cumbersome appearance, likes to carve delicate fairy figurines out of wood. The troll is also short sighted and has a carved wooden leg.

    Deadline:

Midnight (GMT) on Wednesday 13th July (this is Wednesday night, Thursday morning for those that need clarification). There is a 5 minute grace period allowing people to get their posts and links sorted. A moderator will then post a list of valid entries after checking links and voting will begin until the following midnight. Crits are welcomed during the voting process.

Post all comments, crits, pastries, and all WIPs (required for entry) in this thread. Final entries should be posted in the finals thread:

    http://community.imaginefx.com/forums/353088/ShowThread.aspx#353088

    Brief rules and additional info:

A minimum of 2 WIPs are required in addition to your final entry. Links to these should be posted along with your final entry in the finals thread. A link is provided below to details of how to do this. You may be disqualified if you do not post WIP links correctly.

All artwork must be the work of the entrant, and completed within the time frame of the challenge. You may only enter 1 entry per challenge, and may only cast 1 set of votes during voting.

Please keep entries and WIPs below 500k and a maximum of 1000 pixels across. Larger files causes problems for all users, especially those on slower connections.

Moderators monitor the voting in these challenges to combat cheating and maintain fairness. We may discount any vote we consider suspicious, and will disregard any attempts at sabotaging the voting, or in any way screwing with these challenges.

Sounds like fun, and up my alley, sorta.

How big is the Troll supposed to be? Hopefully similar to a human size >____>

    Anyways XD

I think his scale is probably up to the artist, but being a non-human character, it helps to have something that shows scale, whether he's bigger or smaller. ;-) After all, Trolls come in all shapes and sizes! :-)

Think I'm going to have a crack at this one... ;-)

Having a Dungeons and Dragons playing background, I always imagine a troll as being large-sized, versus an orc and human being medium-sized, and goblins being small-sized.  But in literature I think they pop-up all sizes like Thulsa mentioned.

This sounds like a fun challenge but before you start working on your troll do as banj says (I would *never* order anyone around) and vote in the last weekly. It'd be dull if the same three people who entered were the only ones to vote... Huh?

Here's my first WIP.  Difficult to do this out of any context.  A good challenge.

Re: MYFX Weekly Challenge #236 - Grumpy Troll - WIPs

Here's WIP 2, further along in designing it.  I used a monocle to show his near-sightedness.  And I figure he can only get his hands on human-sized tools, and that is what makes him so grumpy.  Have you ever worked with a tool too small for the job?  Very frustrating.  Any suggestions are welcome.  Are the small tools enough to indicate size, or does it only confuse things?  Looking forward to seeing everyones WIPS.

A few Questions, Banjaxedmdt.  1. Does "without context" mean there should be no setting whatsoever? 2.  Should it be a static pose with multiple views like what you see in concept art for games and such?

Thanks!  I just wanted to know before I finish-up the design and get into the layout for the final illustration.

    I remember those, Gabriella! ;-)

Here's my first design/WIP... Needs a fair bit of refinement, but think I'm reasonably happy with where it's going.

    I'm up for a challenge!

Here is my troll, looks a bit like a viking, but hey, they do come from Norse Mythology!

I want to play around with the contrast of the delicate workmanship and his bulky apearance. Still need to add some more elements that show scale though...
