Hum...Interesting theme Dave! I'm thinking of doing a girl that is trying to reach the light while she is being held down by the darkness, which is made by 3 demon-fallen angels. A painting focusing on contrasts...still got to dig deeper though. I'll see if by this weekend I can post something.

BTW there are really nice WIPs already!

Great idea for this month Dave, I think as the month goes by there are going to be a ton of entries as the theme is too enticing...at the same time its a little intimidating as you want to do it justice ;)   It's going to be a creepy month of wips as the ones that are turning up so far are doing a great job of conveying that, I think i'm going to get nightmares!

I think this could be one of your best ZephryA and its only just the start, really awesome textures and colour. Loving yours too Gabriella if you not using a background I say go to town on her skin and hair.

Thanks Guang! All I really want to do is paint beautiful people, but painting horror is lots of fun.

Here's a very rough concept sketch.  The idea is a priestess in an underground vault performing a blood ritual that summons a creature that comes out of the darkness behind her.  Most of the area will be in shadows, and probably lit from a single light source from above or to the side (moonlight through a skylight and/or weak torch light).

I like what everyone's doing so far. ZephyrA, that looks fantastic, like a still from a horror film; great brushwork. Gabriella, yours is amazing. I love the eyes.

Hey guys, there's some awesome stuff going on here already and it's only early!

My idea is a simple one, i thought of what is at the end on darkness and I see hope. I'm having a lone hero holding a baby (the saviour) in the darkness of the apocolyptic world he survives in. Sort of a Terminator theme going on. Also I've been looking at a lot of Marko Djurdjevic's work, hence the layout.

Nope. Didn't like that idea at all, so decided to do something totally different. I am not sure if there'll be a Cthulhu like thing dragging the ship down, or a ghostly pirate visage on deck (which is currently rather plain for that reason). There will be some human forms in the foreground trying to escape whats beyond the darkness,as well as lots of rain and water flying about, making this a very complex pic if it all comes off.
