Lightning [li] MYFX Weekly Challenge #211 - Dracula - WIPs

    Dracula (mwahahahaha)

Welcome to challenge number 211. Remember to cast your vote in the last weekly while it's still open. Please feel free to offer suggestions for future challenges themes (see link below, go on, you know you want to).

Paint a full colour cover for Bram Stoker's novel Dracula (mwahahahah). Only the front cover is required, no spine or back.

Everyone has heard of Dracula (mwahahaha) unless they have been undead for a while. For the sake of doing something different (because my brain hurts), and because the Rebels challenge (which would normally have done something like this) is on temporary/permanent(?) hiatus, this week is a book cover. Make sure it's portrait format, though exact dimensions are up to you and your ruler, and text free.

Midnight (GMT) on Wednesday 19th January (this is Wednesday night, Thursday morning for those that need clarification). There is a 5 minute grace period allowing people to get their posts and links sorted. A moderator will then post a list of valid entries after checking links and voting will begin until the following midnight. Crits are welcomed during the voting process.

Post all comments, crits, vampires (mwahahaha), and all WIPs (required for entry) should be posted in this thread. Final entries should be posted in the finals thread:

    Brief rules and additional info:

A minimum of 2 WIPs are required in addition to your final entry. Links to these should be posted along with your final entry in the finals thread. A link is provided below to details of how to do this. You may be disqualified if you do not post WIP links correctly.

All artwork must be the work of the entrant, and completed within the time frame of the challenge. You may only enter 1 entry per challenge, and may only cast 1 set of votes during voting.

Please keep entries and WIPs below 500k and a maximum of 1000 pixels across. Larger files causes problems for all users, especially those on slower connections.

Moderators monitor the voting in these challenges to combat cheating and maintain fairness. We may discount any vote we consider suspicious, and will disregard any attempts at sabotaging the voting, or in any way screwing with these challenges.

Ha! And I just re-read Dracula in October! Well, I suppose it will make a nice companion piece to my Abraham Van Helsing portrait...

By the way, if anyone hasn't actually read the book, I really recommend it - it's great! Stoker has a very readable style, it's a terrific story and it's quite forward-looking... filled with the high-technology of it's time. It's public domain, so you can actually read it online, or in ePub form.

WIP number 1... simple and bold, I hope, with a mind towards cover layout... the Count as described when he appears at the door, welcoming Jonathan Harker to the castle:

"Welcome to my house! Enter freely. Go safely, and leave something of the happiness you bring..."

Evil Robot, the perspective of your monsters mouth/lips seems to be a little off (think the teeth are ok, its the lips)

Real Quick mucking about. The proportions are all hopelessly out etc. But I'm liking it all the same.

Re: MYFX Weekly Challenge #211 - Dracula - WIPs

    Been awhile...

Not sure I'll be able to finish, but I'll give it my best! ;)

Ok here's my super rough sketch. And I mean rough. LOL!

*Sorry! that wip was so rough...I just felt weird having up. So I removed it.

Having it posted also meant a commitment to the contest (in my eyes). We'll see how the next few days go for me!

    Good luck all!

By the way, if anyone is interested or needs inspiration, you can read the novel online here:

If you are using Safari 5, don't forget to click the "Reader" mode activator up in the location bar, for easier reading. Enjoy! :)

Re: MYFX Weekly Challenge #211 - Dracula - WIPs

This is the first time I've entered a challenge like this...so I do hope I don't mess this up too bad. He is not really at all the older man described in the novel, although I may yet change his hair to white or gray. This is the sketch I ended up choosing.
