in my personal opinion, sarcasm on the forums of a site such as this one, and its majestic glory, should be maintained at a level of purest cynicism, yet have a touch of hatred to it. carly, who as it so happens, is one of my many ImagineFX lovers by default, happens to excel at such things. please do excuse his wily eccentricities Evil Robot, for i love you too, and wouldnt want to have two of my favorite people on here battling it out over the course of the holiday season. so, with that said, allow me to make an shift in conversation, and simply say that everyones entries are all beautiful so far, and that we should all live by Will Ferrels motto in semi-pro...E.L.E. (Everybody Love Everybody). now lets all join hands and begin to sing koom bi AAAH mi lord!!! in harmonious accapella style.
ps. i love you too Alex. are you tossing your paint into this mix as well? i might try to do one, seeing as im on break from school...
Ahh...I hate all the entries here..they all stink... no talent whatsoever...nope...none at all
What a shitty thing to write.
anyone who has been around for a while will know carly's attempts at humour, this is one of them, albeit a poor attempt, and also people who are in the know may know that it means exactly what it says.
who knows? who cares actually, on with the great work
I've never drawn a dwarf before, but I actually enjoyed it. Reminds me of the tales I used to read as a child. Nothing good lasts forever...except maybe jawbreakers...

Looking good so far Klandestineone, once you've added stronger/ more crisp shaddow and lighting to your characters I think it will come together nicely.
Here is my 2nd Wip, added some colour to my sketch and started to refine my dwarf's face a little. going with an orange and blue colour scheme.

Bah, I'll give it a shot after all. I suck at dwarves, but I'll try it at the risk of certain public embarrassment. Here's a first try. Looks nothing like a dwarf--more like Conan (told you I couldn't draw dwarves). I think for starters, his head is too small in proportion to his body, so making it bigger will probably make him look more "dwarven." Any other suggestions? Arms too long--shorten them up a bit? I like the big feet--I think dwarves have big feet. Of course he needs the pipe and probably a tankard of ale, but we're far from that at the moment (LOL).

hey there Fragg, i like the initial idea, as for crits, i would suggest maybe establishing the setting a bit further before jumping into your character, because he looks like hes sort of floating in purgatory, and sitting on thin air. which makes it diffucult to judge his size, as there isnt anything to compare him to. i would sketch out a rough setting, and then try to place him within it. its fun to jump into the fun stuff first, like the character, but it also makes it alot easier if you paint up your image in steps. usually, background, midground, foreground. spend the most time on the midground, as its usually the focal point of most paintings. but its alot easier to build on a midground (what you have drawn) if you have something to scale it against, even a rough background.
as for crits on the character, your right dwarves would probably have large heads, hands, and feet. but there usually pretty short and rounder too, i would lean away from the heroic proportions a bit here. but keep going man, because your drawing seems well done, i hope you finish this one. good luck!
@Fragg, yes I aggree that you should make his head (alot) bigger and dwarves' shoulders are usually quite narrow. His body should be half the size of a human being in relation to his head. Also try playing with scale by adding a big object in the background....or maybe you can oversize his pipe?

Thanks to all who offered suggestions (Gabriella and nickybeats--all of which I took). I kept the basic idea, but started over and re-did the angle (the original angle was more looking up at him which made him look even less dwarvish). I enlarged the head, the hands, the pipe and the feet slightly, narrowed him at the shoulders and added some expression--going for a dwarf who's had a few too many tankards (and is now expounding on his expertise at something). Added some objects to ground him in the scene, brought into PS and cleaned it up, added some neutral tones and kind of roughed in some shadows (don't know where the source light will be yet). I'll get to the beard later--need the basic structure first.

Had to add a rough beard layer--just to get the whole look and see if it works. The beard will most likely not be black, but I just wanted to block in something. Any further crits are most welcome.
