Re: August 2010 MyFX Monthly Challenge - From Ancient China - Final Artwork

    Wang Zhaojun

was one of the renowned Four Beauties of ancient China. Often depicted holding a pipa.

here is a snipit of her history.

(The Emperor granted Wang a generous dowry and , specifically for this event, even changed the name of his reign to Jing Ning (peaceful boundary), implying that Zhaojun's departure for Hun way beyond the Great Wall would ensure everlasting peace and harmony between the Han and the Hun and a trouble-free border.

Under the escort of Han and Hun officials, Wang, in a beautiful red dress and with a pipa in her arms, set off from Chang'an on a white horse for her long journey to the distant land of the Huns. Eventually Wang Zhaojun got on very good terms with the Huns and succeeded in spreading the Han culture and civilization among the Hun tribe. As she was loved and respected by the Huns, Chanyu (Khan) Huhanxie conferred on her the title of the First Lady of Hun Peace, eulogizing Zhaojun as a queen who had brought peach and security to the Hun tribe. )

I vaguley remember tales of dragons disguising themselves as old men and the like.  In my take, the old man accompanies the dragon disguised as his walking stick.

    Title: "Qin Archer"

    Applications: Brushes for iPad

Description: this painting depicts an archer of the famed "terracotta army" of Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of China. I tried to bring one of the wonderful statues "to life", as it were, shown against a streaming pattern of black Qin banners. The colours of his armour and clothing are based on what researchers have determined to be the original painted colours of the statues.

I had this posted since Saturday night. Someone could have said it wasn't linked right before now.

I'm new here. I really thought I had linked it correctly to the actual image. I don't know how to link to a wip thread I can barely post to forum! ::cries::

    1. Charco - Wow, dynamite piece. Love the style, love the concept, and suddenly want a pet dragon for Christmas... :)

    2. Rorke - Breathtaking brush work. I couldn't go past this one. So good...

    3. Big Bad Wolfman - Beautiful, love the junks, the sunset, and the concept is awesome. Conveys a sense of culture 'from ancient china' as well as the physical building. Good work. :)

And, can I just say, it was -not- easy to choose between all of your work. There are some awesome artworks up there, very well done to all. ^^

... and also, I feel your pain, Germaine - my first time competing too. I only read the 'link to WIP' rule at the last minute, and managed to fix my links just in time. Thing is, there's noone to check your work but yourself, until cut-off. But now you know for next comp at least. :)

Re: August 2010 MyFX Monthly Challenge - From Ancient China - VOTE OPEN!

    1. ceeka: (This one resonated the most to me for the topic.  It has a lot of elements in both composition and presentation that really remind me of Chinese artwork.  Nice work, ceeka)

    2. seamanarts: (Great piece.  Dark and moody.  I really enjoyed doing a sort of portrait of an individual from that time in history, and seamanarts' piece was along the same line, so it really stood out for me)

    3. Big Bad Wolfman:  As I said previously--I'm a big fan of sci-fi and your approach to the topic caught my eye.  Masterful execution and epic lighting.  Great job!

There were many others that I could have easily voted for (Dave and Rorke to name a couple--they were up there for me as well).  It was a tough choice as always.  Germaine, you did a fine job, so please do not be discouraged by the disqualification.  We all seem to move about without paying much attention.  I know that many folks on here would have quickly shouted out a warning about your WIPs if they had noticed they were done incorrectly.  Great job all.
