That's how I did all my pictures pre-tablet. I made a new layer and just blocked in a solid colour over the black-and-white then played with the layer blending modes and opacity. The black and white tonal shading should do all the work for you but you can add a little extra with little bits of dodging and burning.

wow, that looking great there bubs, as for the colour ... i would start by colorizing it with a base colour and adjusting and adding other colours using the brush tool in colour mode. oh and i find that it really helps to use the burn and dodge tool when doing this. anyway. i think it may just be time for me to post an update again. well here it is, my little update. is there anything that you think i should change, oh and ive already just redid the hand. so if there is anything else, (other than the screwy hand), please tell me. will post the update with the new hand later

Wow that's coming along really great. One thing though, she doesn't have eyelashes or eyebrows, and since she's part wolf you'd expect fairly bushy brows. Also the creasing along her pants looks a little strange like a star coming out from her crux try doing vertical/horizontal lines to indicate the creasing of the pants instead of having all creasings pointing towards one spot? I don't know it''s looking really good though

thanks for the advice chenyun, she already has eyelashes but i'll make them more prominent later. oh and as for the eye brows, i'll add those too and get started on the pants. anyway, here's an update with the hand fixed.

The way I do it (depending on the mood I'm in) is New layer set to colour. Block in your base colours. Flatten the image and save out under a different name. Then use a "airbrush pen opacity flow" brush with opacity set to around 30%. paint over it building up colour. Use additional layers if necessary.

On the subject of flattening layers, something I picked up a short while ago that I find makes life quicker and easier is to select the uppermost layer, press ctrl+alt+shift+N to create a new layer then ctrl+alt+shift+E composites all the visible layers onto the new one. You then have a flattened layer to carry on but also have all your original layers intact if you want to go back to them.

I don't use dodge and burn these days unless I want a really dark area or very strong highlight. I find the Dodge and Burn tools a little strong so instead of using them I tend to use a new layer set to "soft light" and use a soft edge brush with either black or white depending on whether you want lighter or darker and then adjust the layers opacity.

Hey Bubs if your wanting a quick messy method of getting the colour down what i do is (an this is providing you got a tablet) do a quick freehand marquee selection around the bit that you want to colour (making sure you have a low feathering set) copy it to a new layer and adjust the hue and saturation levels in the image adjustments menu (with colourize) selected. If you find that the colour is only effecting the line work then down the lightness. Don't forget to click back to your background layer before making the next selection.

    Thats my two pence!

    *splat*

    Thats me hitting a wall.

Tried to move onto the rest of the painting last night and just didnt know what to do ! Lack of compositional planning, pure and simple.
Will try to at least finish Sleepin' Beauty off.

And then get ready for the next challenge! ;)

Re: May Challenge - Fractured Fairy Tales - WIP Thread

Okay this is my last night with the computer.

Here is the final wip, please be as critical as you want about anything that needs changing because if you don't I'll just submit it how it is Confused

Since last wip, I've added grass on top of the hair, bad move? I can't work out if it looked better before or not (been flicking the grass layer on and off trying to decide), also tried redoing the bit of hair at the end because it was looking a bit like a curtain tassle but I still don't really know how to make loose hair. Also added some things to the knight, resized the princess so he looked bigger than her, and a few other minor tweaks that probably aren't obvious.

Oh and the text isn't going to be there, I was just trying to save from making too many images so I put it there. I can't decide if I want comic style, handwritten style or classic style for the introduction part.

    Rapunzel wip 6

Also I'm trying to decide on which of these fonts I should use for Repunzal screaming (damn IFX CDs come with too many fonts to choose from Big Smile) And whether I should leave it black text on plain background or put it into a ziggyzaggy speech bubble.
    fonts

Thanks!! Feedback asap would be most welcome, not just because of the deadline but because I'm going into hospital tomorrow so this is my last chance to finish this Stick out tongue

haha. very nice here Chen. I like the idea behind it and the comment about asking his weight is priceless. I like it!

The grass on her hair is a nice touch. I'm not sure what those 3 gold marks on the tower by the hair are for though. I'd remove those. Also, as for choice of fonts, I actually like the elegant font you chose best. Gives it that 'supposed to be beautiful' feeling that contrasts against the reality of the image.

looking good there chenyun, all i can really add to what fablet said is that there seems to be no shadow from the knight, the tower or the hair, so they appear to be floating. great image

Re: May Challenge - Fractured Fairy Tales - WIP Thread

That is looking great ChenYun. The problem you are having with the grass over the hair is that your main background grass is made of large thick strokes and the grass you are overlaying is small delicate grass strokes so they don't match up. Maybe use some thicker strokes over the hair or add some finer grass texture to your main grass area. I'd go with the 3rd font in the top image and possibly 6 or 7 for the "MY HAIR" text. Hope you have time to finish.Yes
