To be honest the previous version was a lot better. I feel that those towers you've put on the bottom left and right of the pic are totally out of place and too distracting, not to mention that they seem to be floating in mid air like some sort of ghosts.

    helio:

I feel the sky could use some more bold contrasts and some more... how should I say... movements, implying wind and hurricanes (since she seems to be creating this storm on the spot it's be natural to have a glimps of the formation of the clouds).

Also, I feel that her hips are too wide and her upper torso/abs section is too short. But then again it might just be your style to do so.

    Try google

Re: June 2010 - MyFX Monthly Challenge - A Storm Rising - WIPs

I've tried, but none of the pics I've got had the view that I pretend (which would be a charging horseman viewed from the back). I'm using regular horse's behinds pictures for ref as well as static people sitting.

    thanks anyway for the help!

Another update, modified the mesh and tried painting it again but can't seem to get the same feel as the last version!

Re: June 2010 - MyFX Monthly Challenge - A Storm Rising - WIPs

Yes the sky will be changed, I havn't started with the clouds at all yet more than some colours. Good point I should try to make it look more as she is creating the storm... hmm tricky one.

Yes there's absolutely something weird going on with her body. I usually draw more... realistic bodies. But I wanted to push her curves a bit, not being the usuall thin babe and at the same time have some kind of cartoony feeling. But I guess I'll do a better job if I change them to what I usually do or study comics a bit more. ;P

    Thnx alot for the comments!

Bit busy over the weekend, so not much progress.  Have started to tidy up especially the fallen figures.  Now to start on the detailed rendering.  How long we got left?Stick out tongue

Many thanks for the encouragement and suggestions from  a few days back. I left this for a few days to see it with different eyes.

I've made some changes, extended the canvas brought the bridge under Thor and adjusted his gesture. Still not sure of it though.

...aaaand another WIP shot. Upped the canvas size from 1500p wide to a healthy 5500p.

I've started to refine the horseman and play around with high contrast. Will follow with textures pretty soon and give it the basic color tone.

Re: June 2010 - MyFX Monthly Challenge - A Storm Rising - WIPs

well, I just can't stop messing around with this, so here goes another step.

I've refined a lot of things, redid the clouds to look more menacing, added some lightning (but I'm kinda feeling they're overkill now), changed the horseman pose a bit and finally started to slap in some colors. From now on it's pretty much be refining and adding tiny details all over the place.

    Critics are welcome (and encouraged!)

Re: June 2010 - MyFX Monthly Challenge - A Storm Rising - WIPs

My previous version contained some close-up cutouts superimposed over the overall landscape. This is a version without the closeups and I added a few more details. Does this work better? What else might it need?

Bringing in the face details (and more details in general) a bit more as well as added hair.  Working on the hands too. I'm okay with the hair shape but the coloring needs work.  It's not popping enough to be believable--looks a bit cartoonish.  Now working with the background storm cloud layer enabled so I can see the interaction of the figure with it.  I will probably have to do some contrast adjustment at the end to bring it together (at least it looks that way now).  Not done much with the lower part of the body since it will have the least detail.  Still have to go back and work on the storm clouds--how much time do we have? Surprise  Got lucky this weekend with the spare time, but that won't happen again, I'm sure.

Hello - Your right there isn't much out there with horses going away from you and at that point of view. There is a book by Jack Hamm- How to Draw Animals that has a section on horses. He does have a couple horses drawn from a low angle though they aren't running. Here's a sketch I did that might help It may not be in proportion so check it against a "model" like a plastic one. I do like the colors.

I really like a lot of the stuff I'm seeing this month. To mention a few (sorry to those I missed!):

Fragg: I love the color & atmosphere in yours, and the figure is looking great.

Helio: I like it a lot so far - it's epic and very dynamic. But the horse does look a bit off. I wish I had advice to give, but I suck at animals' legs.

Sinistral: Very cool. Looking forward to seeing how it shapes up.

Aline: She's pretty awesome. I think once you marry the figure to the background, this is gonna be fantastic.

oaodh: Yours is really dark! I took it into Photoshop, did a level adjustment, and saw a lot of things that I hadn't noticed. You might want to lighten up some areas to provide some secondary focal points.

Here's my slow progress shot. I'm working the greyscale  for as long as I can stand it, trying to get the main compositional elements solidly in place before getting too into rendering. Critiques & suggestions would be particularly welcome at this stage!
