    Re: Exili's sketchbook

i think you could try some traditional sketching for some of the studies, it can help you loosen up and personally i think since it takes longer (for me) that i tend to learn more.

the landscape studies have nice colors! maybe work on the ground planes a little bit more to keep it from looking "floaty".

    Re: Exili's sketchbook

Your are right about studies i think, it's easier to take your time and really looking at what your doing and being very precise.

With the landscape studies.. do you mean so that its more refined and harder edges and stuff?

    Thank you emilysu Smile

great stuff Exili! really nice start to a sketchbook, i can see tons of potential ahead of you, just keep your hand moving and keep the mindset that you are meant for great things, and your potential will become limitless. love those paintings from ref. the sketching is good too, just keep doing it, whether its long and painful studies, or nice loose scribbles, anything that keeps you into it is going to help you stay motivated. keep it up!

ps. if anyone laughs at these, let me know and ill give them a lou kang bicycle kick to the junk spot. Yes

i guess i mean for instance the left one with the road, the road doesn't look like it is the ground, it kind of looks like its floating on the bottom of the picture.  sometimes adding painting horizontally as opposed to vertically with your brush help, which you did with the white.  maybe if you indicated some of the dirt on the sides coming into the road with some horizontal brushstrokes it'll also help.

Okay i understand what you mean now emilysu, will try that Smile

Here's what i did today, i was just gonna try some skin colors, then i started refining the face.. then the nose was totally off and i tried to fix it, but then the eye was wrong, then the cheek then the mouth.. tried to make it look somewhat good but it just went more and more wrong, so i decided i should end this before i go totally crazy.. aargh

I know what you mean about being insecure/self concious, its the main reason I don't have a sketchbook yet. Great stuff so far ExiLi, I look forward too seeing more.

    Re: Exili's sketchbook

oh my god....you people. dont make me post some of my old work in here, i swear i will!!! if you feel self conscious just look through some of your older stuff, and compare it to where you are now. its good for your self esteem, plus it makes it easier to see the areas you need to work on most. alot of the time we tend to repeat the same mistakes over for no reason, other than its how you learned how to draw it. the best way to correct this is to find simialarities between your new and old drawings, then begin to focus on the areas that are weak in both drawings. the more you work on it, the more natural it will become to look.

keep all of your old work, especially in a place like this, where it cant get lost in an attic. it will not only show your improvement to others (possibly inspiring them), but it will also be good to check page 1 every now and again, to give yourself a self esteem boost. even a little one, like "oh good my faces are looking better", can be a good mental stimulant on a strained mind.

    Re: Exili's sketchbook

whenever you feel it's going wrong don't be afraid to look at ref.  the best way to do it is to do a really basic lighting and values study, maybe 15 minutes or less with only a couple of values.  then do one from imagination using the same principles you just learned.

also while it's best to work from real photos, if you are having trouble understanding how to render, just look at an artist you like and see how they simplify it.  some anime or cartoon principles can help you out too, although i wouldn't suggest using that as a guide until you have done lots of photo or life studies.

    Re: Exili's sketchbook

I did some value studies from photo today, i think it helped a lot.. Going to do more tomorrow and also try doing some from imagination after that. Thanks emilysu Smile
