My favorite Pin-up artist is Joe Pekar, why? Because he does pin-up toons and he inspired me to do the same. I love his style of work, it's not too cartoony nor realistic. He paints using a variety of colors, especial in the shadows- doesn't use blacks, use more blues or purples which goes hand in hand when using flesh tones or complements with warm colors.

Pekar site includes a great body of work of different genres inspired from familiar pop-culture characters, too sexualizing mythical women, and other diverse types of women. All the classic arch-types of you would expect from pin-ups. You can check out some of Joe's earlier works to developing one of his pin-up character's in 3D. You can see his work from sketchbooks, earlier works in oil paint, to now digital painting using Painter.

Get a glimpse of his mini-tutorial, giving the viewer or inspired artist to create your own pin-ups. He has a blog set-up to let his fans know what he's working on. If you really like his work a couple of his art books are for sale on his his site.

It doesn't surprise me that you're a fan of Joe's work - I saw a similarity to his style in your Indian girl.

I've known him for years through internet forums, and I think he's one of the best modern pinup artists around. Too many artists these days equate "pinup" with "humourless porn" and have lost that sense of fun that the classics like Gil Elvgren, George Petty and Edward Runci had - Joe's girls are mostly good girls, sometimes bad girls, but always have bags of personality.

Really!? Many artist associate pin-ups with "humorless porn", how insulting! It seems remote, I really don't see how they make that conclusion. So it's,"When I draw a pin-up, it's bad.When you draw a woman in the nude- it's great." Is it some kind of elitist attitude in the art community?

Too me pin-ups are another fun way to express the female form, when done correctly... A lot of the pin-ups back in the day have this suggestive or teasing manner about them, which makes them fun to look at.

I gotta research the "masters of pin-up artist" that you mentioned. To get inspired and what lessons I can learn and apply for my next project. Pin-ups would be the idea job for me, but I have to improve my skills and find a unique way of making it my own.

I didn't mean that artists think of all pinups as humourless porn, but that a lot of modern pinups are humourless porn, which I hate. There's too much focusing on the physical attributes and very little on giving the girls personalities.

Joe's art (and your Indian girl) are more in line with the old style of pinups, where the subjects seem like people that could exist outside of the image, and if they did you'd want to know them.

Sweet! I understand and I apologize for being a bit over zealous with my comment. I checked out the link you posted and I'm inspired! I might do a homage of the pin-up artist illustrations.
