Tweaked a little here and there but not sure where to go next.  Should I try and 'tidy' this up more (although I quite like the rougher style). Any glaringly obvious faults that I've (probably) missed?

I like how the image is darker now. really gives the impression he's in the subway or in a mine and it allows the lights to glow a little more.

Re: MYFX weekly challege #130 Scarlet

So i went to look at some of the pieces you showed earlier of capt scarlet, i think you should make those vibrant colors that are like 70s-80s cartoon ridiculous. Make him really soft too, the hard lines I don't think work to well, just a simple smudging up, or a small pallet knife because your in painter right ( excuse me if that's wrong, haven't used painter in like 6 years, and that was a dumbed down free version) You dont have to "tidy" up per say but the white on the chest makes it look like a different type of cloth then seams to be in the shots you showed me.
His right side seams a little bland with all the action on the other side, this is the only one with his having a gun on his side, but it might help for the few min it would actually take to throw that in
and lastly the top of his arm looks like its dislodged or there's something under his shirt, idk, but something lol
But i think i fell in love with this guy from all the pics lol, classic book cover art. I love the dead in five sec look they all have that you really captured as well. Im really liking this piece

Re: MYFX weekly challege #130 Scarlet

Many thanks for the feedback Fabledgoat and Tak- a few things to think about. It's amazing what a fresh set of eyes can bring to a piece.  Seems obvious now that you mention it.  I am using Painter X.  I usually use Photoshop but this and the 'Companion' entry in th last weekly are the first ones that I have completed soley in Painter (aside form colour corrrection and balancing which i still do in PS) so still on a learning curve!Big Smile  I asn't entirely happy with the way he looked so might try softening him up a little.  The gun holster on his right hip (our left as you look at it) might help to break up the line a bit so I'll give that a go too.   THe white on his chest that you mention is the zip line of his tunic (see here for reference), although now that you mention it, the line isn't right.  The shading might need a slight tweak.  Phew!  Hope I have enough time tonight or tomorrow to finish all this!

Holiday means the husband is home from work and we have to do 'family things' (oh woe is me!)

Actually looking forward to a day at the lake.  Burgers, wet dog, wet kids...  Good times. ;)

    TAK:

Seamanarts, i like it but as eye flow goes, i get stuck on her hands, they are so well done in the dress that is lose. Its kinda like some old master paintings were there is highly rendered hand and faces with loosely painted outfits, but i cant make it to the face because they are so far, the masters used a triangle comp, you got one to but your triangle is to streched. don't over due the dress thu, it is awesome, but it needs something to swing around. maybe more detail in chest or buttons on dress, something dangling from her belt. or maybe the bg will bring it in when its done

And if anyone feels bad about anything I ever say, sry, i feel crits make you better, pointing out good parts dont make you a better artist, unless it is jus telling what to contiue on. I always get better the more im told it looks bad and what to fix. I wouldnt say bad things if i didnt think you could do good things. So feel free to tear me up in revenge Wink

    anyway, croped and detailed up

Oh geez I get my hands looking good and they be too good now Wink just jesting with yas.

but I know what you mean though they do draw the eye some what, so have fiddled around with them to hopefully make them less drawn but im still not finished yet. I very rarely finish a challenge on time though Huh?

Your right about the masters though but did you know and i'm sure you do, the masters never finished their pictures but just did the main features, hands faces etc, then they got their aprentices to do the rest, thats why the faces and hands looked so good and the rest looked like an after thought. Hope mine dosnt turn out like that though Smile

As for her looking so 'stretched' I wanted her to have that tall lean look, may have over done it a bit perhaps.

Still work to be done on the dress and the back ground and hopefully will get that done this evening

Thanks for the crits and totally agree with you crits do make you take that second look at your work and once some one else has pointed out something you might have missed or dosnt seem right to you and you cant put your finger on it it does help, *deep breath!!!!*

so here is the next wip

Ok, I've attempted to join the party, but i got a feeling I ain't gonna make the deadline (none the less, i've enjoyed sketching again). Here's my wip's so far, I'm cheating a bit because the first one is a page of brainstorms and the second is my chosen idea (it doesn't appear anywhere on the brainstorms, lol). I was going for a Brian Froud-esque take on the Scarlet Pimpernel.

Love to know what people think:

ok i've made a start, i've only really got tonight to do this as its parents evening at school tomorrow night so i'm selling uniform until 9pm Sad so it'll be just a bit of refining tomorrow if i have time.

so it's going to get more scarlet i hope & it's not really anything to do with scarlet except the colour when it's done Big Smile so a bit tenuous but i need to get back into the challenges.

very rough start here, i'm just getting a first wip down, so don't worry i know it looks rough! update in an hour or so hopefully & it'll look better,  she says! lol,

Re: MYFX weekly challege #130 Scarlet

Sin- im talking about the diagonal highlight lines, not the center zipper, that looks like a zipper.I guess its a grey not a white, but non the less

Seaman- 1st, yes i did know lol. the flow dose work much better now.  Her new position looks better. Her left hand thow seams to have a thick outline, i cant think of what would make the cloth do that (was it a block in you forgot to take out...i do that lol) Good choice to lose the hat, i honestly feel there is more story now, the hat could have been hers but the yellow material looks like it belongs to someone else. And the lights and darks realy helped, but perhaps to light on her right hand, or it need like 2 more brush strokes to fix it IDK but it looks a little... well... painted right now. and for the bg, that house is super boss, for not the style your doing right now, i know it isnt dont but it needs strait lines.
and the rest dose not look like an afterthought, it is an intentional digress in detail placement lol

Arthur- I REALY like english gent and face stab lol. And for your chosen i love then enviroment, i hope you do flash bright colors for it with some realy deep dark mutes set behind them, would look awsome. crank that saturation metter lol

Rain- not really comp related... but love the new avatar

Re: MYFX weekly challege #130 Scarlet

Seamanarts, stunning work! You seem to make giant leaps forward with each piece. What I noticed with this weeks work (others have pointed it out as well) is that you are doing a great job on balancing the crisp areas and the more painterly areas. Also, your image has a very good sense of structure. The clothes are really wrapping around and hanging from a female form.

As for the height, I am a true believer in always pushing the legs in the longer direction(on female figures). I tend to go way overboard but I think you nailed it just right. I usually measure the figure from the head to the crotch- then compare that length vs the crotch to the feet. If it's even, that's ok, but it feels better if you push the proportions a bit.

    Superb work!
