Blend by painting so paint with no blending

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

    Entry for daily 17/17

Loosened up - didn't use any blenders! This time Monet - will do a couple more artists then do my own thing - I think it's useful for me because I can see they do not use light like a photograph at all - which I need to get the hang of, much more effective. Hopefully my first piece will benefit from this practice.

Thanks for the advice on painting and blenders Koshime, I am going to try and avoid them :-)

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

Couple of bits for saturday evenin' - did some posemaniacs and had another go on painter, tried to paint a boldini portrait - calling it a sketch, can't be arsed to finish, wanna practice as many of these as poss, maybe Ill finish some if they're looking good, this one ain't worth though imo.

    15sec ink

    60sec pencil

Recreation of a boldini portrait, again whacked in the colour and blended last thing, works well, cheers Koshime... will have to repay u one day for all the tips!!

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

    Posemaniacs, 30sec and 90sec

Painting I am working on, this time Lenoir. I have changed composition ever so slightly for myself and given her more "alex" eyes and face, I am very influenced by the way Renoir draws women...

I havn't used any blenders yet and it's still very much a WIP.

I really dig your style, and it appears your style is coming out of it's shell more and more with your work, and it's shaping up to be really...excellent!

I also love how you like to do alot of the "old fashioned" artists stuff, great variety here also.

    Posemaniacs looking uber as usual!Yes

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

Noticed how much better the composition study works without any blending. The secret if its a secret to a great traditional painting is to simulate the random scattering of light. Blending digitally erases alot of this, so it must be subtle. Therefore, if you can put off blending until the latter stages, and generate mid tones (two colours intersecting each other to result in a new value/chroma) that will result in a aesthetically pleasing read

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

Thanks Grenich, gonna be an exciting year ahead :-)

Yep always good to check out how the oldies painted, in a lot of ways I prefer their stuff to "modern" art - but then all this new concept art is freakin' awesome; guess it's finding a balance, learn from the old mix with the new = fun =) ciao!

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

Yep Koshime, I might just use brushes with a bit of resat, or is it bleed? I can't remember, anyway, holding off blenders is much more powerful - learnt a lot from this, thanks again!!!!

A book that you and other readers might find interesting.

    - How to Paint like the old masters by Joseph Sheppard

I've had the book around for quite a few years, and having a quick preuse, realise that alot of what we think is new in digital art, is just cross applied stuff from traiditonal. Nothign is new. its all old hat, we're re discovering.

Props to the old dudes for exploring and making it all so much better for us to appreciate collectively now

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

K cool gonna bag that book.

Updated my pic, I hope I havn't over blended, I think I might have done >.< at least no colour has been lost, I've still got the unblended version though. Maybe try some different blenders out see if any are decent.

Not gonna spend a huge amount more time on this one, want to try some other stuff out, learnt a lot, as I did with the rest of them, much more work to do though; wanted to learn PS, but maybe not yet lol.

    I like the monet study

    (dont work it up more)

Rather, come back to this painting and do a fresh new study in 4 weeks time. And then compare

    Re: Alex's Sketchbook 2009

    Thanks guys :-)

Yeah I'll give the Monet another shot, there is a certain texture to his paintings I couldn't achieve... so hopefully maybe I'll have some new skills by then. It was also completed quite quickly which is always good lol.
