MyFX Challenge #79: "We be Pirates!!" - WIP Thread -

Well here we go with challenge 79 then! I can't believe in all this time we've never had pirate themed challenge...so that's your mission this week. Interpret:

In any way you see fit :)

Finished entries to be posted in the FINAL ENTRIES thread: http://community.imaginefx.com/forums/117726/ShowThread.aspx#117726

before the deadline of Thursday 10th July 2008 at midnight (GMT - please check the correct time difference in your area in advance so you don't miss out). There is a 5 minute grace period to help those in other time zones, but entry closes immediately after this.

Work in progress must be posted in this WIP thread. A minimum of 2WIPs are now compulsory for entry to the challenge details on this are here: http://community.imaginefx.com/forums/thread/107660.aspx

Also please keep all other chatter, insanity, spam, kazkys, murders, rum drinking etc. to this thread to make voting easier. Additional posts there without either an entry or a vote will be deleted.

Voting will take place from the close of entry until the following midnight when you may vote for your favourite 3 entries, stating your 1st, 2nd, 3rd places. These receive 3, 2, and 1 point respectively. Votes are then totalled by a moderator to ensure no false voting has taken place.

Charco, are you using a program for that?  If so, what one?  I love good line art (which I have been unable to create).
    Great start.

    Hi guys,

Echo! I love this challenge! Big Smile

I didn't get to finish my last and only challenge here because of uniwork and stuff, but i'm definitely going to see this one through until the end; who can resist pirates!

I've only *just* gotten to the stage where i'm confidant in being able to paint full figure and full backgrounds in my images to a degree where i won't be totally embarassed...

For this basic sketch I got a little help from CharacterDesigns.com for getting some anatomy right, the rest was drawn without reference. I work on boats for a living while i'm not studying and i've sailed (and even dined!) on classic craft several times (Solway Lass, the Endeavour), -great- experiences.

When I sketch, I only draw in the major elements so there may be lots of other little things ill add in before the end. For instance, Im thinking of adding in a parrot on her shoulder and giving her a feathered hat. We'll see. Thanks for looking!

Once I finish my sketch I think about the colours and the atmosphere. I was thinking about having it nice and sunny but I thought to myself that plain blue isn't going to make this image particularly interesting, so i've settled on a rich sunset instead.

I throw down the kinds of colours i want to use and paint in a very rough idea about where the shadows will go; everything is going to have a warmish tinge to it but ill always make sure i don't get carried away with the saturation.

Before I start the figure, I tend to take my background to at least 50% completion. I find this way it's easier to choose colours for her and get the most accurate idea about how to light her properly. However, as a general rule I always choose where my light source is during the sketch phase.

I'll spend a day or so on the background and then ill start the figure. At that point i'll post some WIP so you can see what's happened. So far this paint you see has been down for about ten minutes. Pretty general at the moment.

I only just noticed that the sail there is too low and it'll whack someone in the head, so I better fix it.

    OOh nice subject.

Tempted to draw a sexy pirate lass. (or drawing Uncle Gabby and Drinky Crow imbibing rum and committing suicide.)

Love that line work Charco. Very clean and tight.

Well done Favreau and Charco. I find that with these weekly challenges, if I don't get something nailed to the mast before the weekend is out, I don't make the deadline. Sorry about the nautical analogy by the way.
No matter how many times one fails, you're only a failure if you give up.

I wanted to reply with a slew of nautical jargon, but I haven't got the energy.
