Thanks Banj, definitely gonna have to try this out!

I'd seen it mentioned in some magazine. Painter and IFX. But never really paid em much attention. Too much hoopla around it all. Yours is a quick 1 min step by step straight to the point. Definitely saving this for later.

Be careful you don't do what I did the first time I played with creating a brush in Painter and alter the original variant instead of copying the brush first... Gah! I had to reinstall to get the brush back because even the reset variant option didn't get the original dab image back.

great community here.  I've got another conundrum...

In photopaint, an object has black handles in the corners which make stretching and shrinking a doddle.  I can't figure out how to do this with photoshop though.  Any clues?  cheers ya'll (specially kazky who is like my mentor now :P)

If it's on a separate layer. Go to the Move tool (press V, or click on the big arrow with a cross next to it in the tool palette. Then make sure that "show bounding box" is checked in the toolbar at the top of the screen (I think it's still in the same position in CS3, can't remember off the top of my head). You should get the grab handles appear and can drag to resize and moving the cursor away slightly turns it to a rotate pointer. Pressing CTRL (or option I think the mac calls it) and clicking a handle means you can distort the transform.

If it's on the background canvas you need to draw a selection over the object first before you can transform it, then the process is the same.

Select what you want to change, and hit CTRL + T.

Scale how you want and hit enter to finish.

Alternatively, there's also Skew, Distort, Flip, Rotate, and Perspective options. Edit>Transform>WHICHEVER.

    Hope that helps.

banjo and charco, thank you both very much.  It's weird asking for help for stuff that seems so basic but I tell you what, you've done it again.  Thanks to your tips I now have control over the stretching facilities.  It's not like I don't know what to do with them, its just finding the utilities can be quite odd when you haven't used the software for long.  (why hide the bounding boxes? - still, it works.)  cheers

    Re: corel vs psd

if you don't want the bounding boxes on all the time, you can click the move tool and then tick the "show transform controls" and then resize to your heart's content, when you're done click the check mark and then untick the show transform if you want it gone.

Back to brushes for a moment. I've found, when creating clouds or making a photo brush, that just selecting the square will give you hard edges that you may not want. I've had far better results by selecting the back ground with the magic wand tool, then go to select/inverse then edit/define brush preset.   I also found out the hard way that white is seen as transparent so make sure the parts of the brushes you create that you want to be "positive" are black, colored, or something other than white.

on another note, if you go to the brush drop down (upper left hand of the control bar) there is a small arrow pointing to the right (I think you've found this menu already) choose a set, you can then either append or replace. I generally append until i've got so many that I can't find the one I want anymore. With the exception of custom brushes, you, can for the most part, change the hardness and size of any brush. You can of course then save that brush with a different name so that if you find that you use one particular setting that isn' t a default, you don't have to mess with it constantly.

AND I've also discovered that you can dump every brush in your drop down list except your custom brushes, and then save the custom brushes only so that you don't have to load what ever set you had active at the time you saved your brush. This doesn't change the default brushes.

And thank you for your thoughts on my stuff... and for looking!Party!!! Hopefully soon I'll finish them. I've been very frustrated at the demise of my tablet's usb connector. I got a replacement... now I just have to face the soldering of tiny tiny wires.... ugh!

soldering a usb huh!?  humn... don't think that will ever quite be the same again.  good luck though.  if you're really pushed, try the 'cheap as chips' trust pen tablet (got mine from asda!).  its just £12.  haha.  Its a bit of plastic but it actually works quite well and will keep you from going insane until you can afford a proper new wacom.  I had one (keep it as back up) and I've yet to sense an improvement in performance over my £250 wacom to be honest.  haha.  weird.
