    Re: em... scribbles

Thank you kind ladies and gentlemen.

robotnel - I've been in pre-press and design for over 20 years. When I started it was all old fashioned galley proofs and paste-up, no computer jiggery-pokery. Illustration-wise is much more recent, possibly the last four or five years. To be honest, it's just bit and bobs, because I've always been too lazy to really push myself forward, and have waited for people to come to me.

Penabled - Yes and no. The main ref of Kurt wasn't from Grindhouse (which I assume is what you meant), but I adapted it to look like the Stuntman Mike character, adding the shades and cigarette, changing the hairstyle, giving him stubble and making the jacket look more silver.

    Hopefully it looks convincing enough.

Very good ! You always seem to be able to catch the soul of the character, your portraits are a bit more than just pictures of these people.

    Re: em... scribbles

    Thank you both

kazky - I hear that Goldie Hawn (Kurt's wife/partner) is quite grubby in real life too.

raimo - I don't think I do anything special, perhaps other than carefully choose the reference, and then adapt it to how I see them.

Here's another Grindhouse star, Rose McGowan:

Cool, em.  I've noticed you never use outlines in the portraits, it's always like a soft line of shadow to define the jaw.  You may have answered this already, but about how long do you spend on these sketches?

It varies. The Hellboy on the first page took about 15 minutes, the Kurt Russell and Rose McGowan portraits probably took just over an hour each.

The Rose piece is nice, she reminds me a bit of Susan Sarandon.

    Thank you, chaps.

martin - I never really thought about it, but I suppose there is a similarity.

dchan - To be honest, I'm not that big a fan of hers, but she has an interesting face.

    Re: em... scribbles

I haven't actually seen either of the Grindhouse movies - I'm waiting for them to be released as a boxset.

Here's a blast from the past - Twiki from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (or Buck Rogers in the Early 80s as I like to call it)

BIDI-BIDI-BIDI What's up with his weight Buck? Twiki looks a little fatter than I remember him, probably him in his later years. And how come Twiki gets a mentioned by name but not Doctor Theopolis? You aren't Droidist are you?
